The joys of jury duty

I didn't get picked for a case but it was still all right. Big room w/nice cushioned sofa-seats, free coffee & tea, computers, big screen tv w/movies, etc. Maybe 300 people were there, 40 got called for one case and then an hour later another 45 were asked to go to another courthouse because they were short there. By noon they said they were clear for the afternoon so we got to leave early 🙂 And thanks to CA's jury rules now, if you don't get picked on your day you're free and clear for another year. It was a very pleasant experience compared to the nightmare it used to be--2 weeks of reporting every day to a cramped waiting room and not getting called for a jury once 🙁

The best part is that the jury service card you get is a "get out of work free" card for the rest of the day 🙂 I'm like super citizen this week.

yeah. I think I get paid up to 10 days of jury duty. then the state pays you $15 plus $.34 per mile (one way) on the second day and later.

I sat on a week-long multi-million dollar lawsuit jury and we didn't get any of that stuff. 🙁

I did get paid ~$160, though.

They probably have a limit to how much you get paid, right?

How do they calculate pay if you're not paid by the hour?

The only time I've done jury duty it was Compton. I got called for a double murder but didn't get selected for the jury.

is that trial jury or grand jury ?

My experience on the grand jury was much different than that.

First day of reporting we all (about 100 of us) sit and wait to see who gets called. 48 of us did and they split us into 2 groups. For a full month, monday thru thursday, we'd go in 10am-5pm (mostly let out at 2pm). And some nights before they would tell us there aren't enough cases the next day so we'd be let off (but we had to go to work). All you do for a grand jury is say YES or NO to "does this case have enough evidence for a trial jury to make a decision of guilty or not guilty". So we heard anywhere from 3-6 cases a day. Mostly misdemeanors/drugs/HS mischief.

Sounds exciting doesn't it ? Hell no. I served 10 official days but there were so many wasted hours. But at least I got picked to serve... I'm clear for another 8 years. The 52 or so who didn't get picked that first day will likely be called down there again a few months later. Some people actually enjoyed being away from regular work... I surely ain't hanging around wasting my free time for that Mickey Mouse bullsh!t.

By the way, you get paid jack. The idea is your company pays you (they verify they do before they really pick you to serve the month).

In my county they pay by the day. You can spend 5 minutes or 10 hours in the courtroom and you will get the same dollar amount for that day.
