A friend of mine is currently doing an intership and has just started college. He is majoring in computer sciences. currently he is doing his pre-reqs during his first year and then will think about where he wants to go. anyone have any thoughts on what will be popular jobs in 4 years?

edit: talked with friend, friend says: well, i do love it and enjoy it... but there is a lot of stuff i am still looking at. i have been interested in being a system admin.

i am also going to look at a minor in graphics

oh yeah, and i jhate chemistry and biology with a passion.

bioeng. will be a pretty hot field in 4yrs., all 3 of cousins are going into that field.

I was few years late to the semiconductor industry 🙁

If you want to get BS, then get ready to stay and get MS. Better yet, get your Phd.

If you want to program then just quit now and go to Chubb.

What is Chubb going to offer?

Scrubbing toliets and flipping burgers looks good, but better change that major to Spanish with a focus on Mexican culture.

hmmm, gotta love OT. some logical posts, some that make no sense and the rest dont tie either together. Ya'll keep it up! That's why i keep coming back 😉

but seriously, is it wise for him to continue in the computer field, or will something bigger and better come into play?

If he enjoys it and is good at it, why should he look elsewhere? There're always jobs for skilled, motivated people.

dunno, i'll ask him

As mentioned earlier, Bio-medical Engineering. If I didn't HATE Biology with a passion, I might have gone into it.

From what I've heard, the person running MIT right now has a Biology background. They said something along the lines of 'The 20th century was the century of Physics, and the 21st century will be the century of biology.'

don't do programming. there are already too many(unless you are one of the best) and with india and china populations getting good educations, programming si something they can easily learn. i'd go with a technical engineering field. something in chemical/materials/bio should be doingt well in the future

Major/study what you like. Why do anything else?

Unfortunately, that's the advice I wish I had taken seriously when I began college...

I hear that. I'm following that advice now. my friend is just starting college and I'm 2 years into it. although my minor is gonna be in linguistics, either spanish or japanese for the most part

Picking a career based on what will be doing well in 4 years is extremely short sighted. He going to have that degree as the foundation of his employment for neary 50 years before retiring, who really cares what the job market is like in four?

Awesome, awesome, awesome. I hope it all works out for you, and I think that's a decision I think you'll be happy with for the rest of your life. Good for you.

He should do what he enjoys and nevermind the rumored job forecasts. If he is talented in his field he will get a good job. Also, in the CS field in general a B.S. is just a starting point, and a M.S. is something that should be sought after.
