The job market isn't that great

I have a CS degree and have been on about fifteen interviews, and a couple second interviews. No luck at all.

My gf is an accounting major. She's had over twenty interviews and a half dozen or so second interviews. She's not getting a break either.

I was feeling kind of down about it myself. Now she's getting depressed, moody, and sometimes crying about it. I don't know what else to do.🙁

that's odd about accounting because it is one of the most in demand job in the market. with the new sarbanes oxley act, almost all firms, espically the big 4, are hiring almost twice as much as last yr.

Keep at it man and hold your head high. Lots of us go through the same thing at some point in our lives. Think of it this way, you made it through college intact, and you'll make it through this.

Who do you consider the big four? I think she interviewed with some of them.

Big Four Firms

* Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu
* Ernst & Young
* KPMG
* PricewaterhouseCoopers

Ok, I know she got turned down by Deloitte.

We both have 3.5+ gpa's at a hard school too.

Im a CS major. I did 8 or 9 interviews for real programming jobs, and then gave up and took a helpdesk support job because it paid well, and there is too much experienced individuals competing for programming jobs it seems.

There's nothing out there. My friend who has 20 years experience as a billing manager can't find a job! She went on one interview and they offered her $45,000, ALOT less than what she was making. She sent plenty of resumes, but it seems employers are looking for people who they can pay less!

I've given up on looking for a new job. I'm a network admin making $31,000 a year and most of my IT friends make double that. I should just be happy I have a job. Anyways, I'm looking for a career change and I've started a real estate development company. It's going pretty well, but nothing I would depend on at the moment.

Good luck!!!

Relevant experience? Or internships/co-ops?

Sucks, I guess you have to keep on it. I just found out today I'm joining the unemployed soon, my contract is not going to be renewed. 🙁

Go back to school.

I can't. I have student loans, regular bills, and I need to find a place to live.

Student loans get put on hold if you go for a masters.

As for where I work, General Dynamics, I know my department(software) at the Electric Boat Division is in a hiring freeze.

Times are rough indeed. I'm a software engineer, and I've had to settle for being handed IT work (web pages, etc).

something i learned on monster boards a while ago

if you send out tons of resumes and get no response, it's your resume
if you get interviews but no job it's something about yourself

if you interview at big companies and get turned down, try again. My wife had an interview at a big hospital in NYC and was turned down. 6 months later she applied for another position, interviewed with a different manager and got the job.

The second time she knew the culture a little better and dressed a little more appropriately.

I work for a compamy called iLumin. We have postings here.

If interested let me know. I am the Team Lead for the support group and have been looking for people. Our support team is more of a network eng type. I will be uploading a listing for those types in the next few days. PM me if anyone wants more info.

How much work experience do either of you have? Since there are so many candidates out there I bet they are looking for both: education and experience.

Believe me, I've been there. Its frustrating as hell. Sometimes you just have to bite it and accept less than desirable jobs while looking for your ideal job. If nothing else try temp agencies to get your foot in the door and network.

I Grad. in May 2003 and am still looking for first REAL job.

Most of my interviews I get told I am over qualified or they hire someone with less education/exp. I signed up with a "staffing service" and did soem interviews. After getting turned down I was told they were afraid that because I did a double in college I would not stay long if hired, so they hired someone with less education AND exp.

So I REALLY know how it feels.

Huge demand for accountants in the entertainment biz... my coworker interviewed at another company, was offered $45k/year starting, but she turned it down because she prefers the work atmosphere here (friendlier people, more laid back). She makes $30k/year here.

She's crazy.

I had no "reelvant experience" out of school, so I had to go back for a second BSCS on top of my BSEE. Did a co-op and got hired before finsihing my second BS.

Expereience is BIG!
