The Jetta TDI engine is looking more attractive lately...

$1.60/gallon for 87 octane unleaded. OUCH.
Diesel's still at $1.35 I noticed....and at 49 mpg w/ a stick a Jetta TDI seems like a wise investment if gas prices are going to be like this more more than a couple of months :(

<--- says this thread was prompted by me riding in a friend's TDI tonight, 155 lbs of torque @ 1900 rpm makes it a fairly sweet engine too

Just checked. 14.5 gallon.

Assuming all highway speeds, at about 60 mph (most fuel efficient) you could probably expect a range of 710 miles a tank! Wow.

damn,that is crazy.
I am lucky to get 350 on a tank in my sable(16 gallons)

BTW, where do you find info like that? Sizes of gas tanks in different cars?

Hell in all-city driving I get like 250 miles in my Contour. And that's a 4 banger Zetec..I don't drive it that hard but I get awful gas milage, you got a clue why that is?

well, I push my car very hard. It is 3300 pounds and has a V6 that puts out 145 HP.
I pretty much redline the car every time I take off. Talk about a 10 second 0-60.
That must be one of the reasons I have sh!tty milage. I am not impressed with the 4-bangers in todays engines in terms of fuel economy. Todays 4-bangers have DOCH, high compresseion, run at high RPM's... all of this translates to more performance and less milage. Also, auto vs. stick makes a big difference. On the highway, 4-bangers - especially auto's - keep the RPM's high. I mean take a look at this:

A Honda Accord V6 and a Vette have the same fuel economy on the highway ~ 28 mpg
The Accord is a 3.0L 200 HP, while the Vette loafs in 6th gear with its V8.

I get like 220-240 on my Contour, Zetec auto, in the city. Just got 340 on a highway trip, and it only took 10 gallons to fill up (12 gallon tank) so I coulda gone another 40 miles before I was in dire need of gas. 34MPG cruising at 75MPH.. not too bad.

I have a '95 Camry LE with the 4-banger (actually pretty peppy) and I get 450 - 475 on the highway. I get about 350 - 375 in the city.

I got a 2K Maxima SE, that gets a sh!tty 180-240 miles per fillup in the city, and about 350 miles driving highway.

Needless to say, I hate the fuel economy of my car, but it is hella fast! ;)

yeah the TDI jetta will drive from stone mountain georgia to tampa florida on one tank of gas. Thats sweet.

However, even though you can chip the TDI, its still a slow car. I think all chipped out, it still is only a 16 second car :)

Good for city driving, redlight-to-redlight, good top end freeway driving, but no good for racing :) just about anything will beat it.

Personally, i get 15mpg with my 1.8litre, cause i get on it all the time, drive in the city only. Oh yeah i am running 12-15psi of boost too..

I used to drive old VW's (80 rabbit Diesel) and could get over 45mpg easy. Very dependible. Only prob with a diesel is that when there is a problem, which is rare, it is usually expensive. I loved my VW's. In fact my wife drives a 95 Golf :)

Stock, it's 0-60 in about 12.8. That's not great, but its a diesel, and it has a lot of torque....

(2/3) * 25 = 16.675 gallons
650 miles / 16.675 gallons = 38.9 MPG

How can ANY land yacht get nearly 40 MPG?? Let alone one with 180k miles on it. By land yacht, I would assume that you mean something along the lines of a Buick Lesabre, Lincoln Town Car, or something else bigger than a Ford Taurus.

I thought he meant 25 gallons total. Don't know many cars with a larger than 25 gallon fuel tank ;) Not unless its a big ass truck:p

VW's TDI engines are great. In fact VW has a 200+hp TDI engine for the Passat in Europe. Unfortunately the US's diesel is too dirty for those engines right now. I was considering a Jetta TDI at one point but fell for the Passat. This winter was extremely cold in OH, and MANY TDI's had their diesel fuel gel. That SUCKS! If you are in cold climate check out an engine block heater and diesel fuel treatments.

Kindjal,
If someones diesel fuel gells in the winter, especially up north, call whoever you bought it from and complain! during the cold season, refineries usually blend #1 diesel with #2 (what you get in the summer) to decrease the point at which it "gells". This is why you see a drop in mpg during the winter, the mixed fuel doesnt produce as many BTU's. While it is beneficial to use a fuel treatment (it helps lubricate the injector pump which is serious $$$$). It should not be necessary to add it to keep the fuel from gelling.
