How can the Democrats be screwing anyone? The Republicans have control of the entire government...if things are bad, we only have them to blame.

A select few Republicans act like Democrats. But the Republican party didn't create the socialist welfare state we have today.

And laissez-faire economy is not a pyramid scheme?
No, it is not.
Shows how much economics you know.

Wellllllllll... Much as I hate to take Zen's side you're wrong on this one. A laissez-faire economy suggests that government controls have been greatly relaxed or ended thus leaving EVERYONE open to the same possibility of success. It's not a pyramid scheme.

SS is a pyramid scheme in that the typical PS needs more new investors feeding old investors to remain successful. Once that balance has been disturbed and there are more people taking money out than people putting money in... the scheme fails. We are approaching that tipping point with SS right now. The baby boomers (re: hippies) didn't have a lot of kids. GenX (children of the baby boomers... approx '68-'81) was the smallest generation in modern American history. As a result you have fewer investors coming in to pay for a much larger group of investors trying to collect.

The Fed was smart enough to plan ahead and run huge surpluses in SS to account for this problem but recent administrations have spent these excess monies. The net result is that the system fails. Typical pyramid scheme. God help us all.

It's not supposed to be a pyramid scheme, and it isn't so in theory. In practice, however, we've seen time and again, that unregulated economy results in the vast majority of the wealth making its way to a very narrow top. It results in minimization of the middle class, the subjugation of the working class, and the near absolute corruption of all power by the wealthy... all the while promising every working stiff a "chance" at becoming rich. If that's not a pyramid scheme...

I don't think you understand what a pyramid scheme is. A PS is a scam from the start. The goal is to string a many people along as possible until you are found out. (Social Security)

A lightly regulated economy gives everyone an equal shot to make it. It is NOT... I repeat, NOT a guarantee of success. Only the opportunity to achieve success.

IT industry is going strong. Everyone that I talked to had a job lined up when they graduated. Also, there are plenty of companies looking for graduates going through Univ of Okla's career services.

And $700 is pushing it. You can get a cheapo Dell for $500. Someone needs to point these people towards Hot Deals.

That would make an awesome Republican ticket.... Leiberman, next to Zell, is the biggest DINO around right now.

School |= success.

Compare me to my highschool graduating class. My tenth year reunion was an eye opener. In my class there were 240 graduating seniors. There were about 100 of us who made it back to the reunion. Of those, most had degrees. I didn't. I was beating most of them at the "income game". That was five years ago. I've only pulled further ahead since then.

A degree is not a guarantee of success. Hard work, balls and brains is what gets you ahead. Thank God I drank myself out of college. If not for my alcoholism I'd be an English teacher making $45k a year. I learned my lessons the hard way. Now I make double that doing what I really love.

My best friend is the same way. We have a contest every year to see who can claim the most income. We are in the process of forming an LLC to invest in real estate.

My life experience to this point tells me that college is a waste of money. Make your money, retire, THEN go to school and pursue your passions.

thankfully your life expirience is very out of the ordinary.

I do understand what a pyramid scheme is. I lived in Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union, a time when business was totally unregulated... and I can tell you from the height of personal experience, that opportunity, while for everyone on paper, was a possibility for a tiny minority.

"Lightly regulated economy" is the key phrase. Regulation is essential for a capitalist economy, because otherwise it turns into "robber-baron" paradise.

Its funny
I look at back to how my parents lived back in he 60's, both had jobs.
Saturday night consisted of coffee, crackers, and cards with the neighbours
The house was built a week at the time, small 850 square ft , I remember lino in the living room and a border of a foot or two all the way around to save on that cost where it was just plywood. There was no cable, no high speed, and one car, one B&W TV.

Over the years they NEVER got in debt unless they chose to, to raise the Credit rating.
Today they are solidly in the black owning several properties and no worries at all in retirement, not bad for a couple without a pot to p1ss in when they got married.

Today I carry that with me, its why I drive used cars and only have a mortgage to worry about. I'm finishing the basement off as funds allow and have 2X as much in the bank as I owe on the house and own better than half of that. My furninture is trashed but the kids both under 5 don't care. The house is nice built brand new 5 yrs ago with help from dad. Sweat equity goes a long way, its too bad most younger people don't get that.

There have always been whiners, always will be. The stoic, hardworking, nose-to-the-grindstone young people are the silent majority, what you always hear are the vocal minority. I do not believe there has ever been an older generation that didn't think the following generations were a bunch of whiny slackers ;)

Well...personally speaking I wished I would have skipped college (BA Sociology), and studied to be an electrician. Oh well maybe next time.
