Two Israelis have been mistakenly shot dead in the West Bank by the Israeli army, which mistook them for Palestinian gunmen, the army said.
The shooting happened southeast of the city of Hebron as the two armed Israelis were travelling in a car, the army said.

Bullets riddled the front of the vehicle, which had the word "security" written in Hebrew on both doors and the hood.

Israeli troops were hunting the suspected Palestinian militants after receiving intelligence warnings that they were planning an attack, the army said in a statement.

The army expressed regret at the error and immediately launched an inquiry into the incident.

'Security guards'

The incident took place just outside the Jewish settlement of Pnei Hever, about five kilometres (three miles) from Hebron.

The army said that initial inquiries showed that a routine patrol opened fire on one of the armed men, after warnings failed to stop him from trying to drive away.

It said that the other armed man was killed by a helicopter gunship as he was trying to run away from the car.

Both men were later identified as Israelis.

Perhaps if a chopper is shooting at you, you'd try to run away too?

Inexperience, perhaps is to blame.

"trigger happy?" did you even read the article you posted?

it specifically said that two armed men failed to stop after repeated warnings, and one of the men was shot while trying to run away. it's sad that it was a mistake, but they were idiots for not pulling over immediately. and bfd if the vehicle they were riding in said "security" in hebrew and english, palestinian gunmen have hidden in ambulances before.

They just killed two of their own citizens... The story you got to read is reported/fabricated by the Military

Under Sharon, the Israeli army has gotten into the habit of shooting first, asking questions second. This is just one instance where it cost two of their own citizens their lives, instead of two Palestinians.

Wow, the car in the article looks like swiss cheese.

yes, perhaps the car failed to stop because the driver was dead already with the foot on the gas?

right, and the story you got to read was reported/fabricated by the bbc. understand that there is no such thing as unbiased reporting, or did you not notice how the west bank is colored a different section than the rest of israel in the map? or that there are links to the bbc's website in arabic, but not hebrew? it was a mistake, and one they regret making. but the other option was letting the car go, which would have been absurd. who's version of the story sounds more plausible? a security car that didn't stop when warned repeatedly, or they had just pulled over for coffee (i know, according to israel's newspaper). we'll probably never know for sure what happened, but you cannot disregard the military's version just because they're the military.

and yes czar, i saw the car. i don't think the army was concerned with a precision sniper shot, they wanted to make sure the car was stopped as fast as possible. it probably happened in all of 5 seconds for the car to look like that

And the passenger feared that the army was going to strike the car with a missile next...
