A catch-all thread for (formerly) responsible gun owners (I.e. people without violent criminal records) killing people with guns.

Here’s a start:

Second best quote from the article: “Police said there is no threat to the public.” Huh? Did they find the shooter??

But the best quote:
“WRAL News just reported last week that Gladwell Orthodontics in Wake Forest recently announced it would give certain Invisalign customers their pick between a Silver membership at the Youngsville Gun Club & Range [where the deadly shooting occurred] or a free Glock 19, which retails for more than $500.”

Yes, our area has seen 3 deadly shootings at gun ranges in the past *6 months*. I thought gun ranges were for responsible gun owners only?? Apparently Invisalign customers are NOT responsible gun owners???

I had to stop going to my local range when I lived in Texas because it felt increasingly unsafe as so many people who clearly have zero firearms eduction were showing up.

How sensitive am I to this now? I reflexively snapped at my husband when he muzzle swept me with a Nerf product.

I have nothing to offer this thread other than a poem i just read

America Is A Gun

England is a cup of tea.
France, a wheel of ripened brie.
Greece, a short, squat olive tree.
America is a gun.

Brazil is football on the sand.
Argentina, Maradona's hand.
Germany, an oompah band.
America is a gun.

Holland is a wooden shoe.
Hungary, a goulash stew.
Australia, a kangaroo.
America is a gun.

Japan is a thermal spring.
Scotland is a highland fling.
Oh, better to be anything
than America as a gun.

I'd think that bowling is safer (unless you're in Lewiston, Maine).

I won't go to a gun range because there are people there with guns. Also I want to shoot some of my guns at long range. I want to sit at at a concrete table and use a gun rest way out in the country somewhere with a cliff behind the target to stop any bullet that gets past a steel plate. Guns are as safe as the person shooting them and a lot of people have an unconscious death wish which for means that it's people not guns that are dangerous.

No, the research is clear, guns are dangerous.

I find this such a silly argument as more than one thing can be dangerous. Evil/mentally unstable/whatever people can definitely be dangerous! What's more dangerous though, that person with a baseball bat, or the exact same person with a gun?

What's more annoying is that this is not a difficult point to grasp and literally everyone knows it is true but some people pretend it's not so they don't have to admit guns are the problem.

Everyone knows that guns are a problem because of the numbers. The point is not difficult to grasp.

Where I think you lose sight of reality is that guns are constitutionally legal and you want to ban all gun ownership. I see that as something like advocating pouring a bucket of water on the sun to cool off on a hot day. The timeline on your solution makes it sound to me like on this issue you live in fantasyland.

Politics is the art of the possible making people like you the creators of the kind of people who declare “from my cold dead hands.” You are firmly attached to the wheel of karma that spins round and round via the motive power of fear.

But it is the numbers all right, the number of people deciding whether to choose a gun or a bat. Those are the numbers your psychological ignorance make it impossible for you to see, the real number needing to be addressed. It is fear that creates the conservative low level thinker. The last thing he wants to rationally face is the state of denial he raises within to insulate against what he really feels.

I think you misunderstand my point - the end goal is to repeal the 2nd amendment or restore it to its original meaning so we can ban all or nearly all private gun ownership but I'm perfectly happy to take smaller steps along the way. I don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good, and fewer guns means fewer dead people so anything that goes in that direction is great!

And while my preferred solution isn't popular now, increased gun control in general is EXTREMELY popular so let's start there and just keep plugging away.

I have always supported that. The problem I see is that the issues that blind people to the solution to gun violence, psychological ignorance, is the same thing issue that blind them arriving at consensus regarding gun control.

The more our perception of the world is driven by perceptions of the threat of chaos, the more people will want to buy them for self protection. Recent numbers indicate that more and more women are buying guns, due, I suspect, to toxic Republican misogyny. Right now Jews are buying guns. The instinct to defend one’s self at the core of evolution.

Mental illness is characterized, in my opinion, by repressed memories of traumatic events that throughout life are at risk of being triggered with potentially violent repercussions if not confronted and cured. Mental illness is at the root of almost all of our problems and all of those that we can fix. Nobody attempts to fix an invisible problem which makes psychological ignorance problem one to fix.

Guns don't kill people

People kill people.

There is simply is no point in banning guns, they are not the problem.

Make me president, and I will solve the actual problem in 28 minutes. Also, if your concerned about global warming, I assure you, I will immediately reverse that trend. There are people who say peace in the middle east is impossible, but I will deliver so much more. I will give you peace on earth, all of the earth, for eons.

Guns should be banned from owning people. Guns aren’t the problem, people are, therefore people need to be banned.

No matter how you slice it, the solution is always the same. The question then becomes one of scale. How many gun deaths are acceptable vs how much freedom to own a gun one has. Go in one direction results in a pull in the other direction. More guns, more deaths, less guns less death. More freedom, more loss of life. Less deaths, less freedoms.

Guns don't kill people, men that come home early from work kill people.
