Bush said voters "know who I am and I believe they're comfortable with the fact that they know I'm not going to shift principles or shift positions based upon polls and focus groups."

Some said the Bush administration report this week saying warmer temperatures in North America since 1950 were probably caused in part by human activity might simply be a bid to reach out to environmentally minded voters before the November presidential election.

I gotta side with you on this one: what Bush said was he didn't care if Humans were adversely affecting the environment, and would not allow environmental concerns to trump economic ones, ever. Fair enough, I suppose, though it seems short-sighted.

There's no flip-flop here though.

Who said anything about a flip-flop?

But, there is one, apparently, in that one story quotes Bush as saying he doesn't go off of polls or give in to focus groups and the next article mentions the Bush administration giving in to environmental groups (or seeming to) in order to garner votes.

i thought it was becuase of either his actions in the recent past about poor enviromental policies and/or his suggestion that he will not attempt to change positions just to get votes.

Just because thats what the article says doesnt mean that it was really Bush's intention or he was just trying to get extra votes. That being said, what candidate DOESNT try to get votes, thats the whole point of campaigning, is it not?

you know what, you bring up a fantastic point.
obviously, we all believe it is the intent to try and get votes. but as of late, im not sure if that is really true any more. both sides seem to be simply speaking to themselves and none of them really appear to be trying to win any one over.
there was a time when a canidate would meet with people who werent in agreement on some issues and they would try to work some stuff out. i dont really see that happening anymore.

It is the point. And to say that he does nothing with respect to polling is ridiculous to say the least. He does 180s all the time because of bad poll number. He was against 9/11 commision, he turned to the UN for post-war help, etc.
