isnt there some remote control, like credit card style that i can use with this port to control media player and my dvd player and winamp?

like third party?

Dude, call your laptop manufacturer.

Anyways, we wouldn't know since you didn't mention the model of your laptop to begin with.

im asking for a third party one, like one that acer doesnt make, its just a port, should some software/hardware combo work no matter who makes it?

Ever put two laptops next to each other and see that popup message from the ir service or whatever it's called? What is the transfer rate anyways? Gotta be slow as cat litter in a pine tree.

it is slow, back in the day i used it
once

it works ok for printing though, if you have any printer with a port

They have these little HP IR printers that are used to get recorded readings from instruments. They remind me of the credit card thermal printers but they are totally wireless. I bet they would understand commands sent from the IR port.

yes, any HP printer with an IR port just needs the hp printer driver and you should be able to print to it

That doesn't matter at all.. IRDA ports are all the same. I can't believe people are saying to call Acer and ask them where to find an IR remote control to control his laptop...

If he's looking for information on something built into his laptop, wouldn't you think it's a good idea to give them a quick call to get that information instead of posting in a forum so everyone can just guess at what it can be?
