The iPhone Apps You Want to See?

I was just thinking, does an iPhone app exist that allows you to take a picture of say a bar code on an item in a store, analyzes it, and then tells you the price of that product at all sorts of competing locations (Best Buy, Radio Shack, Circuit City, Newegg.com, Amazon.com. BHphoto.com, etc)?

Does anything like that exist?

---

I believe this belongs in Gadgets Gear and Phones.

I don't think so, but that would rock.

such a thing does not even exist on the internet to my knowledge(punch bar code numbers into a search and returns list of retailers and prices)

You have several options..

opt1) ItemShelf is an app that actually uses the camera for bar code reading. FREE (iPhone)

opt2) Search in the iTunes Store for Checkout SmartShop (by KiGi Software) (iTouch/iPhone)

I haven't personally used it but its an app where it allows you to input the UPC code and it will show prices (local and online), reviews. It's $4.99

opt3) Another option is Snappr 1D. It's free and works with typing in the EAN, UPC, ISBN code and plain keywords. FREE (iTouch/iPhone)

From my understanding, using the camera on the iPhone to scan codes is difficult because it can't zoom in very closely.

there are several apps that are supposed to do this, but the camera sucks so bad, I've never gotten any of them to work properly, even once.

All I want is an app to search my damn email...is that really too much to ask?

If anyone is interested, I found an app to search my Exchange mailbox, it's called Aristotle. It works...OK. It goes out to your exchange server to search, so it's nice that it can search further back than what's on your iPhone, but of course the drawback is that it's SLOW and you have to have reception to use it. $5...pisses me the hell off to have to pay for what should be basic functionality included with the OS, but at least I can find stuff now without flicking and straining my eyes to see if what's flying by is what I'm looking for.

I want a better internet radio application. Tuner has great CPU usage and does custom streams (including those that require authentication) but it's only good for MP3 streams. It doesn't support AAC streams (even though the underlying decoder does) and it supports AAC+ streams by routing them through the AAC decoder (basically decoding it at half quality) making its AAC+ support useless.

The biggie is definitely proper GPS software with point-to-point directions. That is the one app I would pay real money for.

Maybe I don't quite understand, how would that be different than the current GPS where it shows you the route on a map and you press go, then you get a turn by turn guide on the G3.

I don't know much about GPS systems, not having a use for one.

A proper GPS (or proper GPS-equipped phone - Blackberries with GPS have this ability) will give you voice directions to your location (e.g., "take next right turn") and adapt to changes in your route. The Google Maps implementation is all but useless IMO, because it requires you to look down at your phone and manually notify it of your turns, not to mention that the map automatically resizes to ludicrously tiny scale everytime you turn. (And God forbid you get a call . . . )

Yeah... I want a Flash plugin for Safari as well, but only if I can turn it on and off when needed. I don't want to have to download 500K Flash banner ads when I'm browsing the web on a crummy Edge connection!

Something that will let me cut and paste between applications would be nice as well. I already tried that PasteBud JavaScript hack for Safari already, and would really prefer something that's quicker and easier to use.
