The iPad charges just fine over USB

BD2003

Lifer
Even when it says it's not charging. Saw a post on it and gave it a try...was 60 percent when I left for work, was at 100 when I got home.

I dunno why they make it say not charging instead of slow charging, but that certainly gets rid of one gripe I had.

It might have some sort of long term negative effect on the charging circuits, hence why they say that it does not charge.

Any evidence for this, or a particular technical reason that I'm not aware of? Or just conjecture?

I can certainly understand that supplying too much current could damage it somehow, but too little?

If LI-ion batteries are anything like NiMh AAs, the gentler you charge them, the longer they last.

But OTOH, I'm no electrical engineer.

Id imagine if it really was damaging in some way, the iPad would cut the circuit entirely when it senses that not enough current is getting through. I'm thinking more along the lines of apple not wanting to get a bad rap for a device that charges super slow.

But unless you run down the battery by using it for 10 solid hours each day, I cant imagine the overnight "slow" USB recharge wouldnt be enough for 99% of people.

How are you charging "over USB", when the iPad doesn't have a USB port? Is there an external USB port available, via the iPad keyboard port?

I am assuming he means the apple pin > usb cable that is the same as the one used by ipods and iphones.

Computers have USB connectors, not Apple connectors... Doesn't matter what's on the other end of the cable, if it has a USB plug that plugs into a computer it's a USB cable.

I was studying to be an EE, but didn't get far enough to be able to effectively say if this is more than conjecture. It could also be bad on the computer in question if the iPad is trying to pull more current than the USB port can supply. I have turned off computers with a static shock to something plugged into a USB port, so it isn't that hard for me to believe that too much current being pulled could also be detrimental.

All conjecture, but at the end of the day, if it does charge regardless, then that is good to know.
