Recently when Michael Sam made the NFL draft and celebrated his success by kissing his boyfriend, there was some controversy, not about the fact that it was an interracial kiss, but a gay one.
Other players tweeted their disgust and concern for children who may have seen it. And of course there were many more who felt that way.
Growing up gay it would have been amazing to see that when I was a kid when the world seemed so anti-gay. I hid who I was because of the liberal use of the extreme insult, "i love you!" aimed really at anyone, usually followed by a violent act. It was depressing.
Back in the '60's there was another filmed, famous kiss that caused controversy. It was between people of different races (Kirk and Ohuru).
I think it says something for society that nothing was made of the fact that Michael Sam's kiss was interracial. We've progressed. I know there are some who don't want to progress to the point of just seeing a gay kiss like any other (indeed some balk at any kind of 'progressivism').
I'm looking forward to that day when gay men can express their love with a kiss in public, are you?
