being that the internet is one huge network i figured this was the right place to post this question.

what is stopping us as individuals from being our own providers? i mean why do i have to pay comcast for high speed access?

is it simply the cost of the servers or what. anybody know.? i really have no clue on this subject and i figure there are some real savvy folks here who should be able to shed some light for me.

The way the internet is set up very few organizations control most of the core routing / bandwidth. These Tier 1 ISPs do not deal with the public, they want to sell a large amount of bandwidth and couldn't care less about a 10mb user. They set up deals with Tier 2 ISPs which are your larger providers like Comcast, time warner, AT&T ect. These companies break down the massive pipes they buy into smaller sellable segments and sell them to smaller ISPs (Tier 3) or to customers / businesses.

To actually answer your question, in order to be your own provider you would have to deal with Tier 1 providers or introduce a new infrastructure (which would cost a lot). If everyone was their own provider I imagine stability issues would be rampant and there would be quite a few bottlenecks as you would lose a central governing body.

If you have a few hundred millions dollars laying around to build the network, then by all means you can be your own provider.

The gear used and the fiber optics involved can run a few hundred thousand dollars A PIECE.

The reason you pay comcast is because it takes money and lots of it to offer their service. And of course no business is going to run without a profit.

okay that about sums it up then. like i said i had no idea and knew i could get answers here first. so i hitting the lottery and starting my own service would be about the only way then. i will be sure to invite all of you here for cheap and fast reliable service when that happens. 🙂

Well you would have this nice huge network and no connection to "the Internet".

In order to do that you would have to peer and exhange routing and reachibility with another provider or two. In this kind of an arangement you don't have to pay because it's mutually beneficial to both providers.

Otherwise you'd still need to purchase a connection to the Internet.
