And the donation thread:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=9822373#post9822373

Cliffs: guy buys 70-200 f/2.8 for $950 on Craigslist without knowing it was stolen. A year later he gets a call from police saying he has to send the lens back. So, being a good citizen, he sends it back and is out $1000 (he paid for return shipping).

Here's the happy part: the people on the POTN Canon forums were nice enough to raise $2200 in less than a day to buy him a new 70-200 f/2.8 Mark II :)

Talk about generosity! Just goes to show that Canon owners are the nicest of people ;)

The detective traced the lens to him through cell phone records.

Pro tip: use a burner phone (pre-paid) for Craigslist transactions. There are lots of weirdos on CL, and you don't want them to have your primary phone number.

nice story. doesn't really say anything about canon owners though.
its more about the community.

the ATOT community did something similar for me about 9 years ago. (xmas gifts were stolen about 10 days before xmas, atot raised 600 bucks to buy gifts for my kids)

You too? Lots of stolen stuff is being sold these days. I found out that the Hasselblad M4D-50 MS I bought was stolen yesterday myself. Shipped it out today, hopefully the police will get things settled. I could sure use one right now though, cant afford to get another............

A new 70-200/2.8LIS is just 406 posts and an IAFF avatar away.

How are you with writing sob stories?

Holy crap. I read the thread the day it came out and I posted something in there. I felt bad for the guy. I can't believe he got a new lens though. And this is why I love the POTN community!

Google Voice works as well. Especially if the Voice account is linked to a "throw away" Gmail account.

its always nice reading about things like that. It is always a bummer to get screwed out of something like that member did but its nice the community pulled together like that! 5-10 bucks isnt much, heck a lot of people spend that much just on coffee in one day!
