The Inquirer speaks of nvidias next driver for 6800U

Apparently this will make this card faster then the red boys offer and might bring the long lost performance crown back to Nvidia.

But now for the good part:

Our source told us that the original driver that the press benchmarked back in April when the chip was launched was roughly 30 per cent slower then the hardware is capable of.

So, looks like we should expect 30% faster drivers soon 😀

Now things are getting interesting. New archechtecture and drivers with headroom for higher clock speeds. This is getting better and better. I guess we better not jump the gun until we see some benchmarks though.
🙂)

Hehe I didnt realize Nvidia lost the speed crown this round. I thought it was more or less tied.

If they can spit out 30% increase in performance without IQ loss then I would think they will go from tied to clear winner 🙂

So, the hardware is only capable of 30% more performance, but we have no idea how much of that 30% this new driver will release?

I am glad they know the end limit of the hardware capability already. 😀

They should have been smart and waited a bit to release the card with the more finished drivers.

Guys, you forgot something, Nvidia has already released drivers after the original driver that the press benchmarked back in April when the chip was launched, the original were 60.64, and the next ones were 60.72, and I heard something about 60.82 that were released too, so they've already added some performance to the card, which means you shouldn't expect a 30% performance jump with the official ones.

The article doesn't say anything about a 30% increase, anyway.

It says that at the official release the card was 30% slower than it's max.

It says next to nothing about what the new drivers will do for performance.

The 6800 does badly in shader intensive titles such as Far Cry when you crank up AF. I really wonder if/how these drivers will address that fundamental problem.

...we also don't know if early drivers are the reason for it. Then again, if the NV30 has been any indication...they're back in the game, but ATi isn't out.

I knew the performance increase would go up with a more mature driver set. Looks like Nvidia is lacing up the gloves. Sweeet.

30% faster? At which game and what settings? Nvidia sure knows how to exaggerate. Especially when they have nothing for sale. Personally I would just take 30% cheaper.

I dont doubt this at all.
Those cards hold alot of promise being a new, immature architechure designed from the ground up to smash the aging R300-R420 cores. Its definitely the card to have this round, and probably the core to "watch" for the forseeable future.

Certainly the limited availability of the X800 Pro makes it a great choice, too bad the thing wasnt out in spades though.. I'm having trouble help my friend find one for sale for $400 or so.

I totally agree.

There isn't anything really hard to believe here as far as a 30% increase in performance, and the Inquirer has a history of reporting the truth, regardless of what side it falls on.

Nvidia has the supreme architecture this round, hands down. I also said the following in many posts here. New drivers will offer increased performance and the lead will eventually fall completely to the NV40. It was only a matter of time for Nvidia engineers to open up the power of the new processor via the Forcewares.
