In this article the Inquirer describes AMD plans to release an Athlon 64-based CPU configured for Socket A.

Can existing Socket A motherboard owners expect to see any performance improvements by installing one of these processors? Won't the existing chipset limit any significant performance gains?

Well there was a post a while ago, i think in general hardware. It linked to a foreign site that seemed to have reviewed a 3100+. While i didn't even attempt to read whatever language it was in, most of those that did, said it performed very well, better then most expected.

I predict the Sempr0n processor will bring about evolution of the word 'pr0n' from Internet-only awareness state to a more general awareness state.

That review (or preview or whatever) showed the Sempron 3100+ performing very closely to an A64 2800+ (both are clocked @ same speed, but Sempron has 256K cache insetad of 512). This makes sense because the Sempron is supposed to share most (or maybe all) of the 32bit performance improvements that were made in the A64 line of chips.

I think that you will still see those performance improvements in SKT A, as long as your chipset can recognize the Sempron processor. Not sure how the compatibility all works out. It may depend on your actual MB manufacturer and BIOS.

If that level of performance holds up, and if it is compatible with existing SKT A chipsets, and if it overclocks pretty well, then I definitely see the Sempron as a very good upgrade for those with AXP's. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how things pan out.

My bet still is that socket-A Semprons are just rebranded Athlon-XPs as we know them already. It'd be WAY too much chip design effort to rip the memory controller and HyperTransport off the A64 and implant EV6 bus, only to extend life on an old platform.
