"On the other hand, the dual-socket platform evolution will continue to be tied to the specific microarchitecture. Sometime in late 2013, the 'Romley' platform that hosts the Sandy Bridge EP and Ivy Bridge EP flavours of the Xeon E5 processors - don't forget its simplified X79 flavour is the base for the Core i7 39xx desktop platform - is due to be replaced. The new 'Grantley' platform for the Haswell EP and Broadwell EP processors, with the 'Wellsburg' chipset, should provide again the magic extra performance touch, and the systems with up to 20 cores in a dual socket setup, with twice the peak floating point rate per core using FMA instructions, should offer a good upgrade path for the current Westmere and early Sandy Bridge EP users. This platform should last until deep into 2015.

It looks like SB-E was out in November 2011:

SB-EP came out ~four months later in March 2012:

Are we looking at a late Q2 launch for Haswell-E? What does that mean for a IVB-E that is Q4-2012/Q1-2013 (as rumored, correct?)
That seems like the recipe for a poor investment...
Also interesting to note - no SB-EX. IVB-EX is going to be the next big boy chip, which means Westmere-EX is going to be around for a good while. Looking forward to getting a couple Dual Socket 10 Core Westmere-EX servers in house soon 🙂
Apologies if this has been posted before, it was news to me.
