"On the other hand, the dual-socket platform evolution will continue to be tied to the specific microarchitecture. Sometime in late 2013, the 'Romley' platform that hosts the Sandy Bridge EP and Ivy Bridge EP flavours of the Xeon E5 processors - don't forget its simplified X79 flavour is the base for the Core i7 39xx desktop platform - is due to be replaced. The new 'Grantley' platform for the Haswell EP and Broadwell EP processors, with the 'Wellsburg' chipset, should provide again the magic extra performance touch, and the systems with up to 20 cores in a dual socket setup, with twice the peak floating point rate per core using FMA instructions, should offer a good upgrade path for the current Westmere and early Sandy Bridge EP users. This platform should last until deep into 2015.

It looks like SB-E was out in November 2011:

SB-EP came out ~four months later in March 2012:

Are we looking at a late Q2 launch for Haswell-E? What does that mean for a IVB-E that is Q4-2012/Q1-2013 (as rumored, correct?)

That seems like the recipe for a poor investment...

Also interesting to note - no SB-EX. IVB-EX is going to be the next big boy chip, which means Westmere-EX is going to be around for a good while. Looking forward to getting a couple Dual Socket 10 Core Westmere-EX servers in house soon 🙂

Apologies if this has been posted before, it was news to me.

That is a poor investment, therefore Intel won't do it. Sandy Bridge EP introduced in March 2012, the next generation won't be until at least a year after that. If Ivy Bridge EP is the next generation(which is likely as its a decent improvement over Sandy Bridge EP), Haswell EP is at earliest, March 2014.

What about the enthusiast E chips? Q4 2011 for SNB-E, Q4 2012 for next gen, earliest for Haswell E if Ivy Bridge E isn't cancelled is Q4 2013. I wouldn't be surprised if they are on a 1.25 year schedule and comes later than the dates I mentioned here.

In the 9 years that I have been working for Intel® one thing that I have seen that has remained consistant is that we try to give server products at least a 2 year life cycle. Now since we just released the Intel® Xeon® E5 processors, I think that it would be a minimum of almost 2 years before the follow on for socket 2011 is released into the server market. I don't know this for a fact but it is an educated guess (Die shrinks don't count against this stable platform plan).

I think that you would see other processors that use socket 2011 following this time line.

There is no IB-E, IB-EP or IB-EX on Intels roadmaps right now. But there is Haswell-DP.

And I can guarantee Haswell-E(P) wont be LGA2011 compatible.

Ok, so are we calling shens on this whole article? (Regarding IB-EX, Q4 2013 Haswell-EP, etc.) That's fine by me, I am unsure as to how reputable The Inq is, it is a little off my normal rotation. I have read some decent articles on there from time to time, that's all...
