The Incomparable Nancy Griffith Has Passed

Gone at age 68. She was a thin wisp of a woman, but her voice was commanding and strong and rang true. I had the distinct honor and pleasure of seeing her live a couple of times. I remember during the days of Dubya her pausing between songs to briefly but unambiguously let us all know just what she thought of him. She was, of course, good friends with the incandescent Mr. John Prine, whom we also lost this year. :(

Here she is singing a song she wrote, Love at the Five and Dime.

And her she is performing the haunting Tecumseh Valley, written by the late, great Mr. Townes Van Zandt. It felt to me like a song she was born to sing.

Nancy Griffith, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, I miss them all fiercely.
