I disagree.

The U.S. remake is just a remake, and it's got some pretty bad character flaws and a senseless plot twist. And you cannot compare the artistry of Kurosawa with the ho-hum, "cheaper by the dozen" output of John Sturges. Just compare the filmography for these two directors, side by side, and you'll know what I mean. Not to mention that Sturges misuses his cameras... plenty of mediocre long and medium shots, very few good close-ups...

No offense, but anyone who'd take the remake over the original in this case probably lacks the ability to really understand and appreciate films. Kind of like going to Paris and eating all your meals at McDonald's...

I don't think there is a different version, other than maybe with subtitles and/or other language tracks.

Wow, a lot of gangster movies. I guess we know the type that goes there. I only like a few movies on that list; and I'm not fanatical about them.
 
I've seen all of them.

I've seen all but 9 of the top 100 even... after 100 it gets sketchy... I've seen maybe 75% of the remaining top 250.

Haven't seen in the top 100 (any recommendations?):

39. The Professional (Leon)
48. The downfall
62. Reservoir Dogs (have it ready to watch on Tivo though)
71. Singin' in the rain
72. Modern Times
74. The Great Escape (tried to watch one evening but had to go and didn't bother recording)
82. The Lives of Others
93. Cinema Paradiso (own it though - gift)
98. City Lights

I havent seen these, but I dont watch movies that often- and bare in mind I'm only 24, some of this stuff predates me by a few years..

The Professional is great. It stars a young Natalie Portman. Modern Times is my favorite Charlie Chaplin movie.
