Need a very portable mp3 player. would load it ideally from my computers existing music. (USB )
Needs to have an external speaker as ear buds and headphones are not allowed at work.
Dusty environment, should be dustproof.
Machinery is noisy so needs to have descent volume.
Long charge that would cover an 8 hr shift desirable.
Any recommendations?

what's your budget?
how noisy are we talking here?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_pressure#Examples_of_sound_pressure_and_sound_pressure_levels

how close to the mp3 player/speakers would you be?

how portable does it need to be? could you provide some rough dimensions?
Do you mean the player has to come with an external speaker? or accept an external speaker? or have an internal speaker?
how much does sound quality matter?
There are various battery powered speakers, though the sound quality, output volume, and battery life will be loosely related to size.
There are a lot of portable bluetooth speakers that are water/dust proof, but sound quality suffers at high volume. They should work reasonably well for you considering a noisy work environment isn't the best for noticing audio quality.

what's your budget? *********1-150 max
how noisy are we talking here? *******hearing protection mandatory loud, not like a rock concert maybe 1/3 to /1/2 that

how close to the mp3 player/speakers would you be?******** "Within 3 ft"****

how portable does it need to be? could you provide some rough dimensions? ***"Overall speaker and player maybe something no bigger then 10*x6"x4" something roughly the size of a small radio"********

Do you mean the player has to come with an external speaker? or accept an external speaker? or have an internal speaker?++++++"would be willing to consider all of those options but it is handier to grab one thing and have it all"*********

how much does sound quality matter?********"its for work so won't go the pristine audiofle but nothing tinny sounding either perhaps something more midrange"*********

bluetooth more in the cellphone world isn't it?where you'd be playing off your phone to an external speaker?

at 10"x6"x4" we're stuck with the portable "bluetooth" style speaker size.
some good places to start looking
http://www.amazon.com/review/R1BFWDU...wasThisHelpful
http://www.wired.com/2012/12/bluetooth-speakers/?viewall=true

many of them should have 3.5mm jacks, so should work with most mp3 players.

the logitech ue seems like a good bet if you want 360 degree sound (i.e. moving around all over the place).

a lot of places sell it refurbed for ~$120

if you want more focused sound the ecoxbt seems pretty good (i.e. more stationary job).

k thx will look thru these and try to decide if a blutooth speaker paired with an on the way out technology like mp3 players or a smartphone is my best bet. I have pretty much held out on cellphones so far. had a cheap one for a while, but I used it so little its stuck in a drawer somewhere.
