Hey People,
I was wondering what you all thought about the current IT market. As networking/systems engineers, do you feel that it is easier/harder to get jobs? Do you use recruiters? Are there more/better opportunities out there? Definitely interested to hear what you think.

It's hard if you don't have a lot of experiences or fresh outta college. But the market is slowly bouncing back.

Market is very slow where I am at, but it had been frozen for a couple of years. So I am seeing some movement now.

Where do you live? That's pretty key.

Here in DC the IT market is good, IF you have a clearance. If you have clearance, especially TS, you can pretty much pick your job. There are also jobs here that don't require clearance. But the government will always need IT people (govt and contractors), so work is plentiful.

I've thought about moving from West Michigan. I had a TS/SCI until I retired, could probably get it back pretty quick since I had just finisihed updating it a year before.

Your background check, etc to get your clearance back would probably easy, yes. The problem is finding a job where they will take the risk of getting you cleared. Most jobs here ask for clearance in hand. Since there are so many people with military backgrounds here, companies can find plenty of applicants who are already cleared.

It is hard to find firms willing to pay for a clearance, but it can be done, since I did it once 🙂

Thesis, recruiters are bad, avoid them. Remember - you don't pay them, so they don't work for you, and they don't have your best interests in mind.

Like most of the job world, you need to know people and have good experience to draw on as examples of good work you've done. If you're just starting out, it's hard. Find a reasonable job to start with, and build.

i am in South Louisiana and the IT market is booming with "Reconstruction Part 2" actually you can get a job doing anything you could possibly want. Head on down we can use all the help we can get.
