The Hurt Locker - 5/10 - A good movie wrapped in a bad one. I watched a pirated version on the 30 hour train ride in China. They were passing around a portable DVD drive you could rent for something like 3 or 4 bucks that had a HD on it with lots of movies. This was one of them. The tension and pacing of this film was spot on. Despite there being a surprising lack of action at any point you never feel the movie is dragging its feet. The characters are well defined. Actually they are too well defined. You have your solid no fuss do it by the play book soldier. You have your emotional Joe everybody soldier who doesn't want to be there. And you have your emotional brick wall give me all you got I can take it soldier. There are several very well crafted scenes in the movie like where Staff Sergeant William James comes face to face with the dead boys family and doesn't know how to handle it. However the movie never really congeals into anything and I really didn't care for the ending. The ending makes it more of a "war is hell but damn I love it" patriotic film. I thought it would have been much more impactfull if James had come home and found a life there he couldn't face then ended up killing himself or something similar. I came away with a feeling like I'd just watched 1/2 of a movie.

My review from Keith's movie thread.

I liked it. I also liked the ending. It sort of solidified James as not just some reckless soldier, but a guy who had found the perfect job for him.

I really liked the scene where they were pinned down in the desert by the sniper, though. It showed the coward soldier had some balls after all, and it showed what awesome soldiers the other two were.

Looked like a fun flick.. I'd like to see it.
It's not really a "fun" movie. It's really intense. I'd say it focuses more on character development than blowing stuff up.

Best film about "modern" war (Iraq war) since "Black Hawk Down".

(Not including "Band of Brothers", "Downfall", etc. about WWII.)

GO SEE THIS MOVIE!

Edit: It is scoring 97% on RT.

Finally saw it last night. Terrific movie. Best of the year by a long stretch, so far anyway. I like the multiple levels on which the "war is a drug" theme works.

Caught it a week or two ago. Best movie I've seen this year by far. I felt very strange leaving it, but it was a total rush.

I'll have to implore EVERYONE to see this movie. It's one of the best movies I've seen in my life. Quite intense. The ending seems like a bit of a rip from "All Quiet on the Western Front."

I have no idea why no one objected to having the following on the set when the movie is clearly set in 2004.
There's a scene where a soldier is playing Gears of War on the 360. Also, I saw the main character listenning to an ipod touch. Neither existed back in 2004. Both are shown VERY clearly, and that indicated a lack of attention to detail from the makers of the movie. However, that's besides the point. Excellent movie regardless.

Ya, at first, I didn't like the shaky camera either, but as the movie went along, I completely forgot about it. The movie just sucked me in.

I agree 100%. I love war movies, but this one was one I just didn't find all that appealing.

Really good movie.

The Director was married to James Cameron. You can see his flavor in her work. I also liked "Point Break".

IMO she's a great Director. I hope she ramps up her Directorial work b/c she does good stuff.

Yep. The pace and the tension never let up.
