Doesn't sound like the movie is going to be endorsing the actions of these characters at all. Sounds more like something written by conservatives to show the evilness of liberals. Or maybe it's non-partisan, trying to show what happens when political tribalism goes too far.
Movies made by and for conservatives tend to have fewer Hollywood connections, are lower budget, have poor production values, and usually an obvious political message -- e.g. the terrible Atlas Shrugged adaptation.
The company making this was behind (or at least involved) with The Purge and Get Out, as well as a bunch of other horror thriller type movies. After watching the trailer, I get the impression that they're more trying to be provocative than they are trying to communicate any specific political message. The guys being hunted seem to be the protagonists in any case. But anything else would be far too risque to get a mainstream outfit like Universal on board, so that probably goes without saying.
I think the backlash from various conservatives personalities over this was ill-founded and ironically seems right in line with the regressive left's playbook. If this was a movie celebrating "hunting deplorables" that would be one thing. But there's no indication from the trailer that this is the case. Sad that given the right opportunity, both sides will express censorious opinions even while proudly proclaiming to be against censorship.
The PR statement is that the movie was pulled because of the recent shootings. But I don't think that's the entire story. If your movie looks bad releasing close to some recent major event, you delay until that event is no longer recent. You don't cancel it altogether.
It's a shame because the movie looks like it's finished (or very close to it), and hopefully it eventually sees the light of day. Stopping a project at the start of production because of political pressure is unfortunate. Doing the same at the end of production feels dangerously close to book burning. I hope it eventually sees the light of day.
