Doesn't matter what the 5970 will cost when 6000 series are released because right now you can buy GTX470 SLI for $600 that's both faster and cheaper. Even if 5970 falls in price, so will the GTX470 and 5870 cards. The only time 5970 was ever relevant was when it was available for $599 (which it was on few occasions). At the current price of $700, 5970 is by far the worst deal in videocards.

We have a Sapphire 5970 in stock selling for NZ$750. Surely it can't be more expensive in the US than here. It's a much better deal than GTX470 SLI, which would run to about $1080.

The epeen crowd "requiring" the fastest single video card are buying up the nearly zero supply. While two 470s will be faster they require an SLI certified board, which is a bit rare among high end Phenom or socket 775 boxes.

Once the 6 series drop I expect the demand for the 5970 to dry up but the supply should also approach zero. Besides, the $449 6 series may outperform without any of the crossfire headaches.

Yes, but we also expected 5870 to outperform 4870x2. Remember that NI isn't going to be quite as new and improved as we would like. I'll be happy if 6870 is comparable to 5970.

Since when has the price of the fastest video card in the world been 'relevant"?
The fastest car in the world cost millions...hardly relevant to the general "sporty" car market yet they sell and are respected for what they are.
I seem to recall lots of NV fans fawning all over the $799 GTX8800Ultra.....

Ya but those cars also appreciate in value! Plus, it's a status symbol. What status symbol do you get for owning a 5970 (other than in the geek community?) I am sure beautiful women, all your university friends and business colleagues would envy the 5970 much less than your Veyron Super Sport. :awe: Think about it, every expensive sports car (that is similar to a 5970) from Bugatti EB110, F40/50/Enzo, McLaren F-1 has not fallen in value. Over time they generally tend to have greater value once production stops. However, a $300 graphics card will be faster than a 5970 in about 2 years.

The 5970 will probably just be like the 4870X2 when the 5870 was released.

actually, that's unlikely. remember that with the new arch going from 3xxx to 4xxx we had a 4850 trading blows with the 3870x2; the 4870 was clearly faster, probably 10-15%. However, 5870 is clearly slower, by around 10% last I looked, than the 4870x2. Northern Islands looks to be a hybrid of those two as it looks to incorporate some "next gen" items and some carry-overs. If I had to guess I'd think 5970 ~ 6870, so it will be high-end for another year or two, but probably not worth paying $700 for most of us.
