JOHN GLENN SAID

Things that make you think a little:

There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq in January.
In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the
month of January. That's just one American city,
about as deadly as the entire war-torn country of Iraq.

When some claim that President Bush shouldn't
have started this war, state the following:

a. FDR led us into World War II.

b. Germany never attacked us; Japan did.
>From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost ...
an average of 112,500 per year.

c. Truman finished that war and started one in Korea.
North Korea never attacked us.
>From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost ...
an average of 18,334 per year.

d John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962.
Vietnam never attacked us.

e. Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire.
>From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost ..
an average of 5,800 per year.

f. Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent.
Bosnia never attacked us.
He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three
times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on
multiple occasions.

g. In the years since terrorists attacked us , President Bush
has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled
al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran, and, North
Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who
slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.

The Democrats are complaining
about how long the war is taking.
But
It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno
to take the Branch Davidian compound.
That was a 51-day operation..

We've been looking for evidence for chemical weapons
in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find
the Rose Law Firm billing records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the
Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard
than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his
Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick.

It took less time to take Iraq than it took
to count the votes in Florida!!!!

Our Commander-In-Chief is doing a GREAT JOB!
The Military morale is high!

The biased media hopes we are too ignorant
to realize the facts

But Wait .

There's more!

JOHN GLENN (ON THE SENATE FLOOR)

Some people still don't understand why military personnel
do what they do for a living. This exchange between
Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard Metzenbaum
is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive
impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one
man's explanation of why men and women in the armed
services do what they do for a living.

This IS a typical, though sad, example of what
some who have never served think of the military.

Senator Metzenbaum (speaking to Senator Glenn):
"How can you run for Senate
when you've never held a real job?"

Senator Glenn (D-Ohio):
"I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps.
I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions.
My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different
occasions. I was in the space program. It wasn't my
checkbook, Howard; it was my life on the line. It was
not a nine-to-five job, where I took time off to take the
daily cash receipts to the bank."

"I ask you to go with me ... as I went the other day...
to a veteran's hospital and look those men ...
with their mangled bodies . in the eye, and tell THEM
they didn't hold a job!

You go with me to the Space Program at NASA
and go, as I have gone, to the widows and Orphans
of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee...
and you look those kids in the eye and tell them
that their DADS didn't hold a job.

You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in
Arlington National Cemetery, where I have more friends
buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch
those waving flags.

You stand there, and you think about this nation,
and you tell ME that those people didn't have a job?

What about you?"

For those who don't remember ..
During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an attorney
representing the Communist Party in the USA.

Now he's a Senator!

If you can read this, thank a teacher.
If you are reading it in English thank a Veteran.

It might not be a bad idea to keep this circulating

Yup, we never should have attacked Germany, that would have played out well.....

Yeah, my mom just sent me this email, bolded is the best part. This has to be old though, no way anyone could think of writing this now.....

His facts are a little skewed, Germany in fact declared war on us a few days after Pearl Harbor, this was because Hitler was hoping that in doing so the Japanese would reciprocate and declare war on Russia. Well that backfired, and I think most of you know how everything played out.

You can't justify war by saying "but previous presidents did it". It was wrong then and is wrong now.

Second in Vietnam we didn't send troops in to topple a government and lie about nuclear weapons. Instead we sent troops to protect other governments from being toppled.

"When France pulled-out of Vietnam in 1955-56, the U.S. basically felt it had to fill the void in order to prevent Ho Chi Minh from unifying Vietnam under communist rule (the 1956 peace accords with France had divided Vietnam in half). So starting in 1955, the U.S. starting sending military advisors to assist the South Vietnamese Army. The conflict continued to escalate as communist rebels in the South gained more control of the countryside, which required more & more U.S. military advisors & equipment to prop-up the South Vietnamese army. Finally, in 1965, we sent combat troops to prop-up South Vietnam."

The sad part about Vietnam is that Ho came to us first for help and only when we told him to get lost he went to the Soviets for help.

Right there is where I dismissed this as pointless partisanship. There were only 39 "combat" related deaths in Iraq in January? Really? I'm not sure which January Glenn is referring to, but I'm guessing what he really meant is there were only 39 U.S. deaths in Iraq that month. Unfortunately, if this January was at all typical, there were hundreds of Iraqi casualties that month. Apparently in Glenn's mind, and yours, Iraqi deaths don't matter. I find that attitude repugnant, especially in a political cheap shot like this.

I have tremendous respect and admiration for Glenn as an astronaut. He was one of my boyhood heroes. For Glenn as a partisan hack? Not so much.

I like this email. It has that emotional appeal that really grabs the nuts of the brain dead.

Senator Metzenbaum, a self motivated capitalist lawyer who make his living off his wits shouldn't criticize Senator Glenn, a faithful employee and hero of a cradle to grave socialist military system set up by people just like Metzenbaum to insure there will always be enough cannon fodder to protect their God given right to make as much money as the market will bear. One hand washes the other and it's pointless to arm wrestle yourself.

Pft. Big shock that the keyboard warriors support others dying still for lies. :Q

Good to see the brain-dead are still cowering behind their monitors. It is comforting to know your spacebar, numLock, and backspace buttons are safe from the terrorists.

And OP, here is a big :cookie: for you and your regurged mass email. Grow up and ship out.

Ok silly question time, then...

How is it that, according to part of the OP's post, John Glenn was talking to Howard Metzenbaum on the Senate floor in 2004 when Metzenbaum retired from the Senate in 1995 and Glenn retired from the Senate in 1999?

Too bad much of that crap is either completely made up or very misleading.

That's precisely what I was going to say.

Glen may as well wave a big American flag and shout "God Bless America" while he's spewing that jingoistic batch of half-truths and platitudes as far as I'm concerned.

John Glenn wrote one of these misleading hack Fwd:Fwd: e-mails? Seriously? Has anyone checked to make sure some no-name right winger didn't write it? A lot of it looks just like another e-mail from an unknown author. In any case it is not honest and was written to mislead the ignorant masses, just like all of these types of e-mails.

Edit: http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/glenn.asp It was partisan hack crap pasted with the Glenn stuff. Please please never post these type of crappy e-mails as P or N.

That little fwd: fwd: fwd has been floating around for a while.

The argument with Metzenbaum happened in 1974. Link

And that bit of "truth" was injected into the e-mail to back up the first half which never happened. This Glenn "speech" is akin to the George Carlin and Robin Williams "speeches" that also never happened.
Update: In 2005, someone prefaced the John Glenn/Howard Metzenbaum article with the following item about Iraq. This addendum has nothing to do with John Glenn ? it's an anonymous piece that has been floating around the Internet since 2004, but because it has been tacked onto an article about Glenn, readers have been misled into thinking that it is a transcription of something he said:

EDIT: Grrr... Todd beat me to it.

I've seen that before. Stop posting crap that you get forwarded in your emails.

I recall the original comparing the homicide rate of D.C. per month compared to Iraq though.

A communist probably understands more about Labor than an ex-soldier. His tact was wrong, his deliverance was distasteful, but in the end he wasn't wrong.
