The Homeless and Avalibility of Aid

I've often read in this forum (in the many threads pertaining to giving money to beggars) that beggars do not need food, that there are plenty of orginizations that will provide food and shelter, that they just want money for alchohol, etc. While I generally agree with these assessments, I'd like to see a link to some statistics that demonstrate that there is, in fact, enough free food out there for the homeless. I got onto Google and did a quick search, but didn't find anything very useful very quickly. I'm at work right now, so I thought I might just... find someone else to do the work for me.

Anyway, this is the chance to validate your arguments on this subject.

Er, yeah, I agree with you. But I was asking something else.

I know of one place in Pittsburgh that gives free lunch and dinner to the homeless as well as offering a place to sleep.

Some reasons the homeless won't go there:
- They don't tolerate swearing
- The meals are low-budget
- If you stay overnight you have to be up and out by 9 AM
- If you are drunk they won't let you stay
- No drugs allowed. If caught, you can't come back.

This is according to an article in the paper I read a couple months back.

There is no one starving to death in America. Whether you want to believe it or not, the vast majority of homeless people in the US are those who choose to be homeless. Not through life choices (as most people think) but because they do not want to live inside the system. They refuse to go the shelters, they don't want to work, they don't want to pay rent, etc. Not because they are lazy, but because they do not want to be a part of the system or to jump through the hoops that our society requires that people jump through. Go to work every day, pay taxes, pay bills, etc. They'll refuse to enter a shelter simply because the shelter will ask their name.

No idea on studies, but my response is that I donate to a food bank instead of giving them money that's probably for their 40oz or crack.

Actually I donate to Northwest Harvest which supplies food to individual food banks throughout Washington state. I know the money will go to people like single moms trying to feed their kids and that it's much less likely to be wasted.

Some homeless are disabled, retarded or mentally ill, and they probably should be rounded up for treatment. Many others are just lazy or con men making a very good living from panhandling and they should be sent to China-style prison labor camps run by Wal-mart (since they know how to mercilessly exploit workers).

Sounds like lazy to me! 😉

Since this is ATOT, some other suggestions for "aid":

Organ donation. The livers are shot, other parts are usable for those who aren't infected with AIDS. Those with AIDS, see next solution.

Medical research like in that Hugh Grant movie.

Soylent Green. It's a cookbook!

Bumfight arena! Sell tickets and TV rights, and the one bum out of 100 that survives gets a lifetime supply of the intoxicant of his choice.
