The Holocaust Happened To People Like Us

Has anyone here seen these ads yet? All I can say is WTF? Is this a warning or a "softening up" of the young minds watching that crap network? There's a big part of me that's glad to see this as I truly believe we're heading in this direction, but part of me worries that it's just a tool to soften the eventual blow. I'm really confused by this.

Thoughts?

"Soften the eventual blow"? It seems obvious to me that it is a call for the youth to think about their future and specifically about their Rights in that future. Really don't see how this helps people to accept that possibility.

The Iraqis have been living this nightmare for the last 5 years, so I think these ads are very relevant. We need more people to start putting themselves in the shoes of others, and these ads pose that exact question.

The first video you linked is a carbon copy of midnight US raids on Iraqi civilian homes. There is an entire generation of Iraqi children now scarred with the image of M4 waving soldiers bursting through their bedroom doors and carrying off their family members under the cover of darkness.

Wow

I'm sorry but the Iraq War does not equal Genocide. I'm bewildered you'd make such a comparison.

As for the video's, there's a difference between an Orwellian 1984 idea, and the Holocaust. If our generation has to get a "wake-up call" from MTV then that in itself lies the problem.

Maybe they are saying what can eventually happen if you don't stand up for your freedoms like those written in the bill of rights especially in a country that cares more about self pleasure and chasing the money to get those pleasures.

Uhh, he didn't say there were Deathcamps in Iraq. His comparison was to Cops/Military kicking down people's doors and dragging them off.

That embarrassingly low number (28%) is going to jump dramatically in about 1-2 weeks once the media latches onto a new milestone in Iraq.

My mistake, but there is no sense in portraying our own "oppression" to victims of the Holocaust.

Transfer all of my disgust and bewilderment to MTV then.

I don't think MTV was trying to make a direct link to Iraq, at least not totally. I suspect this is a multi-tiered information campaign. One of those would be a reminder of the Holocaust and of the need to avoid it happening again. That certain parts of what is shown is actually happening is unsettling, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the conclusion will happen. One needs to be vigilant though.

It might spike a bit but then it will go back to this and that speaks volumes about America.

I wanted to hate these ads but after watching both I think they are fantastic, no kidding.

No kidding. For a change its something grounded in social responsible commentary and because mTV is normally so opposite that behavior people are still ripe for negative responses to it.

Not that I expect someone who openly hates the US military in all ways to post anything else... but it's interesting that you object to this sort of thing NOW.

This is nothing new in Iraq, the difference is the guys with M4's are doing their best to capture or kill terrorists or their supporters who are doing their best to kill other Iraqis in the name of their "insurgent" uprising.... While just a few short years ago, when someone stormed into the private home of an Iraqi it was usually either to haul them off to be tortured and killed by the Baathists or so that Uday Hussein could rape any girls under the age of 13 that happened to be around.

How would you know this? How many midnight raids in Iraq have you been on?

Oh, and MTV is trash, always has been, and this commercial is quite disgusting.

I don't think I've seen anything on MTV in 10-15 years. They went from music videos to stupid reality type shows. Oh wait, that crap is popular here... :-/

The good news is nobody watches MTV anymore.

seriously... I don't even know the channel number for MTV on Verizon's FIOS...?!

Whatever the case, those videos are ridiculous.

What's the point?

I suppose it has something to do with hate and tollerance, but they really don't do a good job of connecting the 'people like us' idea to anything.

The point is that you may feel you're safe and secure in your current life, like those before you in history who've found themselves at the wrong end of a gun or in a mass grave, but that there are always fears and we should be vigilant of the kinds of forces that create genocides. Few go through childhood expecting to be gassed to death or watching their children hacked to pieces before their eyes. The ignorant who ignore and know nothing of history cannot prevent its recurrence except by dumb luck.

So you wouldn't object to an ad that shows families going through security and then getting airplanes followed by a picture of the World Trade Centers and the words "happened to people like us" on the screen?

What is more relevant historically, the holocaust or 9/11?

And more importantly, which one is more like to reoccur in our life times?

Sure if you would like an ad like that, by all means. A repeat of 9/11 is more likely, but terrorism doesn't kill millions of people at a time, genocides do, so if you want to play a pure numbers game, I personally have no fear AT ALL of ever being caught in a terrorist attack (remember, 1/10,000 Americans died in it). I do have a fear of some uber oppressive government rising and doing God knows what because it has happened continually through history and will happen in the future.
