Hi ,

Does anyone know what the small hole in the corner of the heatshield on a P4 chip is for ?

And does it matter or affect the chip in any way if its full of CPU grease ?

I like that keychain idea GetOffDez , ;)

Im a PRIME candidate for a P4 2.6 GHz Northwood keychain .

I used to get about 3.6 GHz stable with that board and chip .

As mentioned, it's part of the manufacturing process. Ignore the hole...if you block it, it will not affect anything. Just pretend it's not there.

Thanks for the info ,

and iv'e most definitely learned my lesson about TV and PC Maintenance :frown:

It is EXTREMELY annoying , with a near enough Brand new Lan Party motherboard and P4 chip sitting here , knowing there useless , there only about 4 month old .

The ziff got mashed Underside of it when i forced the CPU in and the pins werent exactly straight .

And the white sliding door kinda broke when i was taking it off too look .

So it just kind of crumbled about 15-20 pins and mashed a few ziff socket copper fins :(

In the end i done a not too bad job of bending the CPU pins back into shape , I should have took a picture before i rebent all the pins back a good as i could , about 95 % were totally flattened .

Im just glad i didnt ruin my new P4 2.8 , because i put it in the board before i even new the board was broken , i couldnt see the socket damage under the white slider door .

ahh we'll
