It is going to be crap, no action in the hobbit. It is a childrens book, so this will be a childrens movie.

I thought for sure that I had read an article that said Tolkien's estate owned the film rights to "The Hobbit", and that his son would never sell them while he was alive. Can anyone confirm or refute this?

Why the hell is Peter Jackson making King Kong? I sure as hell don't want to see a movie about a giant gorilla.

First paragraph says the same thing, so, it's not a sure thing imo. The last article said the tolkien kid wasn't interested in any of them being movies and he wouldn't release the rights to the hobbit.

personally, I felt that Hobbit was an amateurish book. But it would still be nice to see it on the big screen :)

there's some as$kicking going on in the Hobbit.

Mirkwood would be pretty cool to see...

some more spiders to fight...

Dragons...

sneaky little thieves...

Have you read the hobbit lately? It may be presented differently, but all of the same elements from LOTR are there. There's a dragon, orcs and goblins, trolls, gollum, elves, a war, and lots of other things that made the trilogy interesting.

Just because the book has more of a childish tone to it doesn't mean the Jackson has to direct it that way. Expect the basic story to be there but it would be very similar in tone to the trilogy.

Would it be illegal for him to just go ahead and make The Hobbit movies even if Tokein doesn't release the books?

You mean release the rights? Yes it would.

And jackson is remaking king kong because its been his dream since he was a kid.

Yup. And now that Jackson has the money to do it, he is going to do his lifelong dream (who wouldn't want to do something they have been wanting to do since they were a child?).

I wouldn't expect the silmarillion at all.
