The high school I start teaching at on Wed has no Scantron machine!

During the orientation staff meeting I ask the principal "Is it true that we don't have a scantron machine?" And all he says is "That's right, we don't," and then he just looks at me.
So I look around the room at all the other teachers and propose "Doesn't anyone need a Scantron Machine?" and they all look at me with blank stares and "huh?" written across their forehead.

Let's see if I can't persuade the administration to fork over the money to buy one in the next couple months.
Considering all my Bio and EnvSci tests are gonna be multiple choice, I could really use this contraption.

[rant on]...to be concluded with purchase of scantron machine

lol...
WASL (state test in washington) isn't scantron. They correct it by hand 🙂

But we do have scantrons and use em on finals so yep 🙂

Just write out the test and copy it. The students can circle their answers. I had a Chemistry teacher in high school who used this method.

Make one of those nifty circle punch graders. Where, the right answre is punched out. You put the key on top of the test and any holes that arent marked are wrong.

So what you are saying is you do not want to work, right? Grading is part of the job.

If i have to, I don't mind grading, but if I can save a few hours a week and put that time towards preparing my lesson plan, I wouldn't mind

short answer: yes i don't want to work 😉

I'd rather have a teacher work on their lesson plan and ways to improve the class than have them waste hours grading multiple choice tests.

I always loved lazy teachers that gave generic
scantron tests that tested your level of memorization or luck moreso than your
level of comprehension...

How about trying to actually teach and maybe
assigning an essay or something ?

Essays don't work that well for bio.
It's a difficult matter of figuring out if the student understands something or not. You end up having to look for keywords, but then other students feel cheated because they knew the material, but just didn't use the right keyword.
Plus this is for AP Bio, and I intend to prepare them for the AP test and college, both of which are entirely multiple choice exams

EDIT: I'm sure plenty of people have had college bio with essays, but most of my experiences have shown a predominance of multipe choice questions over essays

I would rather have my kids tested with real tests that cannot be graded in a scantron so they might actually learn something. School, whether it is grade/middle/high or college has become a joke in my opinion. If teachers use scantron tests that means they usually have a bank of questions they draw from in making tests. Collect a few years worth of back tests from other students and you don't have to actually learn anything. You simply study 500 questions. I saw it done all the time in college. My stepdaughters told me of all the ways they got around tests in HS too. It is sickening. No wonder this country is falling apart. The kids are only getting smarter in how to be lazy.

when will you learn.... you get a TA to grade them for you during class. DUH!

newbie teachers

point taken 😀
but if my school can't afford a couple hundred dollar scantron machine, I don't see myself getting a TA anytime soon

After giving out the tests, have the students grade someone's else test and call it a collaboration experience, then ask for a raise for your team learning initiative.

lol when I found out that my teacher was using this method to grade our tests, I just marked all choices for the questions I didnt know of 😀😀

A friend of mine from high school is in her first year of teaching. Need to drop by her school in a few weeks and take her to lunch. Hmm.

if you make it to next year just grab a "mature" senior that want's a zero period 😉

if you request one for the period before lunch... watch them line up trying to sign up under you. Let the senior out 5 mins early to lunch and you've made their life and got yourself a grading machine.
