The Heroes Thread

Yesterday, and today's aftermath are truly tragic days for so many. But I think we need a positive thread to mention and speak about the heroes already emerging. There seems to be a Heroism in Americans that shines through most brightly in the very worst of times, and I think we should have a thread to post stories, names, or groups of people who stepped up and showed heroism in these events.

If anyone knows specific stories, post them here.

If anyone wants to mention groups who sacraficed and gave, post them here.

This isn't meant to me a debate thread, though - so if you disagree with someone else's view, keep it clean and polite. Discuss, don't flame, please. :)

I'll start:

1) The NY Firefighters and Police: First ones into the burning building, 200 are feared dead in the collapses and fires. The rest have been working tirelessly and selflessly to save people from the rubble, smoke, and injuries.

Risking their own lives, losing so many friends and co-workers - these are truly the best of humanity in this time of crisis.

2) The pilots, crew, passengers, or military pilot who brought down the Penn. airliner. We don't know the details, and it may have been the hijackers themselves by accident (most definitely not heroes, by god) - but if, as suspected, that plane was brought down to stop it harming others, then whoever did that is likely a hero. I can't imagine the feelings for a military pilot if it was shot down, and if it was the crew or passengers - then by golly they are true heroes.

Add more here - this needs to be an uplifting thread about the best in humanity amid the worst in humanity.

Mods - sorry if another thread is not appreciated, and you can of course lock away. But I think we need a couple positive threads - to speak of goodness in the face of so much evil, no?

I know the media is much-maligned (and you may not agree with some of the ways they presented this story), but there were some pretty brave cameramen and reporters who stayed very close to the action to keep us all updated on this tragedy.

i think you just mentioned most of the heroes... also do not forget the noble volunteers who came from not just all over Brooklyn and other NY areas, but also Tennessee, and Jersey and I bet all over....

I was extremely please to hear Mayor Giulianni (sorry if misspelt) say yesterday that they didn't need any more volunteers at the moment... It's good to hear people stepping up & giving their time & effort for causes that deserve it.

I think anyone who donated blood or money to the red cross can fall into that catagory.

In relation to your #2 choice of who brought down the PA plane, I grabbed this page from some comments on /.
