The Heaviest Insect In The World *SHUDDERS*

Weta are the only really nasty bugs we have in New Zealand, and to be fair they're harmless to people (although their bites can be a bit painful), they just look scary as hell. I've never seen one that big but I've seen some pretty big fuckers before.

Before whitey came to NZ there were no native land mammals in the country and Weta filled that ecological niche, which explains why they got to be so huge.

Woa, I didn't know that. Would've guessed there was a marsupial or two.

What do wetas taste like, or does no one eat them? Are they used for anything at all (fish bait)?

If I remember correctly the Maori used to eat them, and some probably still do. I sure as hell wouldn't. I have eaten several Huhu grubs which are delicious (taste like peanut chicken).

"The Giant weta is so heavy that it cannot jump"

That's a good thing... think about all the broken windshields and head trauma with those massive grasshoppers flying around. :Q

*Pictures Ace Ventura running around yelling It's in my hair! It's in my haaaiirr!!*

Looks like a good source of protein. Then again, the native Maori would be displeased if someone ate one of their gods.

They look like the Martians in Quatermass And The Pit (a movie that gave me nightmares back then).
