Having cars and trains share the same driving surface just seems really stupid.

Meh Id be cool as a fan driving one of those trams. You easily outweigh 98% of the vehicles on the road. Driving that tram around is like driving a tank; you'll win every time. Colliding with a tractor trailer is real concern and likely to cause injury.

It makes me think they should just put a guardrail up between the regular cars and the trams and force crossing traffic to make right hand turns to go a block out and come back at a perpendicular to the track. It's obvious drivers aren't looking over their left shoulder when doing 45 degree angles.

I think that'd be an awesome job. You get to hit idiot drivers, but I guess hitting the occasional pedestrian would really get to you after a while.

Harder job is Bus driver by far, you have to actually steer. I have seen those things cross two lanes of rush-hour traffic to reach a bus stop and then they have to do it again to get back out from the stop.

True, but that one where the little kid was hit made me cringe and I'm sure the driver felt some guilt. Sure it's the kid's fault and all that but I have more sympathy for children than idiot adults.

I still don't understand city's insistence on running streetcars.

They carry more people in less space, and are smoother and more comfortable than buses. If your question is why cities have them running alongside regular traffic thats a great fucking question. They should be separated by a barrier with limited cross (left turn) traffic and synchronized traffic lights.

Why aren't they? Ask city governments why they kowtow to vocal motorists that are scared of losing their precious lanes so they can continue to drive their 2 ton hunk of metal through city streets while texting and drinking coffee.

You ever seen foundation work for streetcars? Huge capital expenditure without payback.

Run electric buses. They do not stop traffic when they stop.

The payback is in lower operating costs, higher capacity, and increased economic development. There are obviously drawbacks like massive upfront investment. They've been a huge success in many cities, a dud in others. That's not always the fault of the streetcar though.

Capital cost is not upfront, it's the constant ripping up of tracks to redo. Subways have massive upfront cost but if you have the volume, it is much better.

Of course location matters. Our regional government decided to make dedicated bus lane down the middle of a busy street. Build giant stations and separated lane. Less than 24 buses runs through it in a day...

Blame your regional government for doing it half-assed. Ours put in a BRT system like that and runs buses at something like 10 minute intervals. And even more often at peak hours.

The city I live in decided to do the same thing.

6 months after completion a total of zero of the new buses are usable. They are electric and don't get near enough range, and are already falling apart. Supposed to get $250 million from the feds to help pay for construction that will probably never come. Tons of car accidents becasue drivers can't figure out why there is a new middle lane. Plus, almost no one rides the bus becasue they don't take you anywhere useful.

It's far worse than than the worst expectations.

we don't have the population for that. That is my point. I am all for public transit, but it has to be sensible.

Not to mention those bus stops offer little shelter for the winter, retards should just have covered both lanes on the top as well so that at least there is some shelter.
