Has anyone else read this book? It is the best book I have read in quite some time. In short, it is about an Arab chieftain in Palestine, but the book chronicles much of the history of that area o the past 100 years. After reading this book, you will understand why the middle east is going to hell in a hand basket....

Hello MWilding, long time no talk!

I read this book some time ago but enjoyed it thoroughly even then. Check the copywrite date.

Uris wrote quite a few other books in this area also.

You are quite right in your observation IMHO.

Info on Uris and many of his books! (Slow to load but link works)

Yes, a very long time ago. I read a number of his books around that time, and found all of them to be at least good. You might be interested in "Exodus" as well.

Exodus was an excellent read. Can someone tell me if his books fall in the category of "non-fiction" or some cross between history and fiction (a la James Clavell)?

Kru - I can't speak for his other books, but the Haj is historical fiction. None of the characters except for the really obvious ones (Ben Gurion, Nasser, Ibn Saud, etc...) are fictional. I think Exodus is going on to my to-read list ASAP.

Methinks I must make a trip to the library. I haven't read any Leon Uris since reading Exodus, which was excellent, and some more Clavell sounds like a good idea too... Can anyone recommend some good Clavell books besides Sho-gun and Tai-pan?
