The guy from Windows Support wouldn't let me support his Windows.

So I got a call from the Windows Support tonight. You know the guys I'm talking about.

I told him he had reached the Windows Support which was a good thing since I had noticed his machine had quite a few viruses on it.

I told him I was going to need his IP address and he'd need to open a port so I could help him with his problem.

He was bit confused by this point.

He wanted to know who owned the computer and I said I hoped he did since he called for help.

I told him to launch command line and type IPCONFIG.

He told me his IP address started with an "N" which of course doesn't make sense, but I let him tell me the rest:

His IP address was:NO.1MOTHERFUCKER.
Then he hung up. :(

Maybe he'll call back so I can help him some more. :)

Anyone else mess with these guys?

I always do. But your idea will be used next time they call. Genius.

Hahaha. I love that these guys actually become assholes when you play around with them.

I strung one along for over an hour acting like a stupid user. "I click on the what? You'll have to repeat that, I'm not good with computers" When he finally remoted in I trottled my internet to dialup speed. He eventually gave up and hung up on me.

I think they recently got busted though, the calls stopped. Often I'd get the calls at a bad time though when I'm not prepared to play around with them and record it, so I'd find an excuse to let them go, but without calling them out, so that they call back later.

I'd have to go through that 1+ hour recording one day and trim it so it only goes through the highlights and make a video.

I've talked with him before. I can't believe he actually told you his IP address. Guess he really wanted help. Too bad he got disconnected.

If I have some time to kill, I will mess with them. They are amazingly patient. Last time they called I told the guy I had to get to my computer and start it up, then laid the phone down. About 20 minutes later I picked the phone back up and he was still there holding.

A couple weeks ago I played stupid and mangled every instruction he gave me so he had to repeat everything multiple times. He was getting frustrated as I kept reading back the URL he thought I entered with mistakes, to the point where when I said "I typed H-P-P-P-" he said "No, no, no, no, no, no, h-TEE, h-TEE!"

Then I said he sounded angry and now he knows how I feel when he tries to scam me, and he politely said "F--- you, sir" before hanging up.

At least he called me sir.

One of my elderly customers (a savvy 83 year old lady) loves it when they call her. Once I clued her in to the scam (she told them she was calling me first the first time they called her) she now goes into an absolute panic (screaming included!) when they call, moaning and worrying about government spying or maybe it's the Russians! She then keeps wasting their time in various ways until she eventually tells them that she's running Linux, specifically CentOS 7 (I wrote it on a note for her, she's on Win 7) and asks him what he wants her to do. They try and insist that there's a Windows pc in the house but she doesn't let up...lol! They finally give up and then she drops me a note to let me know they came knocking again. She's done this at least four times that I know of. Nice lady!

She loves to waste their time and she figures she's sparing another senior a call while she has that crook tied up.

Well at least they're nicer than folks around here. :p

I have not had a call from them in over a 18 months but I also cut my landline about then. The last one I got a call from I told them I had to hang up the phone to connect to the the internet. He was confused by that. I then told him that I only have dial-up through AOL. He hung up.

My elderly neighbor fell for that once - I hate people that prey on the elderly who actually trust people. I can't remember exactly how much it cost her, a few hundred bucks I think, and I never followed up to see if she was able to get a chargeback on her credit card.

I wish she'd just called me over to begin with, I have a nice airhorn I like to blow in the earpiece of scammers. She's finally about to drop her landline though and she doesn't get those calls on her cell.

Oh yeah. Highlight of my day sometimes. It's hilarious how confused they get when you turn the tables on them. iirc a couple people here have custom virtual machines setup with viruses embedded in banking_info.xls & whatnot to have some fun with them :D

On the flip side, have an older coworker who fell for it recently. Conned him out of $600 :(

On a related note, got the call today from the "lower your credit card rate" scammers that always use a phony Caller ID. I pressed 1, got connected to some Indian guy, he had a smooth spiel that he was going to lower my credit card APR to 6% and about to make sure I understood he was legit, he would verify my current balance, my interest rate, and amount of my last payment "all from his side." All I needed to do to verify MY identity was to give him my credit card number and expiration date.

I kept reading the number wrong and he would tell me it was invalid, then I said it was hard to read since the numbers were worn. So he asked me to get a recent billing statement and I said hold on and let me find one. Set the phone down, flipped through some channels on the TV. Picked up the phone 11 minutes later, he was still there. Told him I was still looking. Took another 8 minutes before I heard him disconnect.

I get the scammers on craigslist all the time asking about present condition and final price of item. I tell them I do have it and price but before we proceed I say I need to make sure they are serious. I tell them I need a hand drawn picture of something, the last few times it has been Macho Man Randy savage, they get pissed usually and go on about not having the time and too busy a schedule. I keep hoping one day I actually get a hand drawn picture
