why do they need toplay it so loud? why don't THEY get headphones? you said you gotta compromise.

also, what about people who work at night and sleep during the day?
 
You need a new option OP. How about one for "Play it loud when your immediate neighbors are not home." I used to live in an apartment with only one attached neighbor, and he worked nights so I could run the volume up all night and not bother anyone. By contrast, he slept until about 4pm during the day so I was mindful of that.

they are compromising. they are not playing at night.

Every lease i have seen has a thing about "quite hours". usually something from 11-6am.

and for people that work night? sucks for them.

I pay for my apartment too, and what says I can't play my music? I pay just like you.

Further, my lease has quiet hours written into it, that start at 10pm on weekdays, and 12am on weekends. If I want to play loud, bass-y, rap music at 11:30pm on a Friday night, they have no right to complain.

Now, if I am mates with my neighbors, and I know that they are trying to sleep, then sure, I will modify my listening habits. I wouldn't be a jerk about it.

Some people have night jobs too. Daytime = sleeptime.

Exactly. They're the ones who are creating the noise, which propagates to others. If they want the loud noise, and are apparently willing to spend a lot on their sound hardware, they can afford high quality headphones capable of rendering them deaf within a month.

In this college campus, we have a 24hr courtesy policy, and 10pm-8am quiet hours. I'm not saying they're followed or ever enforced (damn college kids), but they do exist.

You've got a few neighbors to consider though, depending on the apartment. You might have neighbors on up to six sides of you. That's a lot of people to find, to see if they're not home. Bass carries surprisingly well.

After I had to retire my nForce2-based system, with its ability to filter out all sounds below ~300Hz, I installed a switch on my Z-640's subwoofer. I can listen to music now without producing bass that'll irritate the neighbors - and all music has bass. Even a slow Enya track will put out a lot of bass. If anyone's hear, "The Longships" with the bass turned up, you know what I mean. It's got some strong sound down around 60Hz, which would pass through the walls like nothing was there.
If I want a lot of bass, I've got my Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's, which can give me a headache from the sound they put out, and I imagine that they can go even louder.

I just never understood the mindset of, "Well I love doing this, so screw anyone else if they don't like the noise from it."
You're free to swing your arms all you want, but the second you hit someone, you impinge on their rights.
You're free to play music all you want, but the second that loud bass hits someone else's eardrum, you impinge on their rights.
 
Why not be practical and talk to your neighbors.... no use in building up resentment... it sucks, I know, cause I love my bass too, but compromise at least means you will make the effort to work out the best solution for you and your neighbors.... if they are complete a-holes, then they can suck it and you can turn it up!!
