Laying down rubber across America

David Luciani, from Toronto, drove a Porsche 911 twin-turbo this week in the Gumball 3000 rally, from San Francisco to Miami in five days. This is [part of] his account:

Day 3, Las Vegas start

Back on the road, a U.S. businessman in a Yellow 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo X50 was pulled over by Arizona State Police for travelling five mph over the posted speed of 45 mph and charged with racing on the highway.

Boo Arizona!

Day 6, New Orleans start

The European driving the Porsche GT2 also had a delayed start, due to some mechanical problems. In his attempt to catch up to the Gumballers, he was clocked by Florida police at 250 km/h (155 mph), at which time he pulled over, got out of his vehicle, raised his hands and asked if he was going to be arrested. The state trooper was so amused by this approach, and by the fact he had never pulled over an Englishman driving a right-hand-drive vehicle, that he was given only a warning.

:Q Also, a quick summary article.

A 5,000-kilometre party

A coast-to-coast race of exotic cars began in San Francisco last week with a flood of calls to 911 operators from frightened commuters caught in the middle of the rally. By the time the first competitors reached the finish line Tuesday night in Miami, they had racked up more than 500 traffic citations.

Drivers in the race said at least one participant had accumulated $10,000 in fines and bail postings before reaching New Orleans. Another entrant had been cited for going nearly four times the speed limit ? 335 km/h (208 mph) ? in his 655-horsepower Koenigsegg in Texas, said racer Brian Kelley of Chicago.

"If you have trouble hearing me, it's because there's a police helicopter hovering over us," said Kelley, 28, as he sped through Alabama in his Audi S4 Tuesday. Kelley was pulled over two blocks from the starting line in San Francisco for going 55 mph in a 25-mph zone.

That is the LIFE. :D Edited to add both mph and km/h to each figure.

I've seen their website and remember what the car badge looks like. For some reason...the badge looks very Swedish.

The driver apparently blew the car's oil gasket, and the only replacement part he could find was at a nearby dealer. But the only part the dealer had was in a new car.

So, the man purchased the car and took only the gasket.

I met the guy driving that car (it was reported to be the Koenigsegg in that story) when they came through New Orleans. He was trying to fix a blown master cylinder for his clutch. I did a bit of research and that Koenigsegg uses a 4.7 liter ford block, would a mustang gasket fit? He's not going to find another Koenigsegg on this side of the atlantic very easily.

the gumball is so lame. a bunch of rich pansies "rallying" across america, with no safety checks for previous racing experience, driving in an unsafe manner through traffic. then they take breaks for sleep. it's like a 3000 mile circle jerk.

the best part is the website, where they warn you against gumball imposters. the gumball itself is a twisted and distorted imposter of the real deal, the cannonballs run in the 60's and 70's. the cannonball's participants were screened for experience and roadworthiness and they made it a point to not disrupt traffic. they also didn't stop and take naps at cushy hotels along they way. it was a nonstop haul, 40 hours or less.

Well, this isn't as much about the drive as about an overall experience of lavish living. Making it as grueling a drive as possible would be counterproductive.

Just think. You, a cute girl, a V12 engine under the hood and the vast expanse of American freeways. I will reiterate:

That is the life.
