the guide to Overclocking.. correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok, this is basically what I have done in small easy steps.. and a nagging feeling that I haven't overclocked it enough is haunting me, so any pointers are appreciated.

Pre-steps - Decide if you want to go overboard with watercooling, keep it cool with bigger better air cooling, or just dip your toes in by not enhancing your pc with addons. With me I took away the aluminum heatsink for the more robust thermalright sk6 and a delta 30cfm.

The heat before I installed the thing was:
CPU idle: 46 celsius - CPU max: 51 celsius
system temperature always the same 27 degrees celsius

Installing the sk6 was easy, but I made the mistake of putting too little arctic silver II between the heatsink and cpu, but by taking the heatsink off, adding more to the cpu, cleaning the heatsink I got much nicer, LOWER numbers.

Now here's what I did then:

1. increased the FSB until 3dmark2001 started to freeze, then lowered it until stable again.

2. increased the multiplier until freezing happened, then lowered it until stable again.

3. then I increased the core value and I/O voltage value and tried 1. and 2. again until it keeps getting locked up.

Now my goal by overclocking is to get my pc beyond the 6000 mark in 3dmark2001, and I'm pretty close to it (even gone over it a couple of time with oc-ing).. here are my specs :

Athlon 1333 MHZ @ 1485 (can't remember the last digit, was over 5 though)
- Vcore value 1.80
- I/O Value 3.60

Idle temp : 43 celsius (idle isn't that important.. or is it?)
max temp : 47
system temp : 27

Even though I've overclocked, and the heat isn't going over 47 (which it used to with old heatsink), why can't I overclock it more ???? I thought I might hit 1500-1600 mhz, but I'm barely able to hit 1500..

I've been tempted to up the voltage more, but how much is too much ? Is it safe to up it as far as the mobo allowes ? and what artifacts does increasing the voltage have ? (basically what should I be looking out for?). And should I up both of them at once, or one first, and then the other ? This is an area unexplored by me, so anyone with experience, please help :)

stan.

Sometimes a combination of lower fsb and higher multiplyer works better than going with max fsb. Since you've maxed out your fsb, i assume it's in the 150-160 range, maybe higher. When you increase your multiplyer you're increasing the speed at least half of that.

for example
if you're running 156*9.5=1482
and you can't do 156*10=1560

try use 152fsb instead of 156
ie: 152*10=1530

On VCore, up to 1.85 is what AMD recommended. But a some of OCer have it at 1.9 to 2 or even higher to achieve max o/c. Since they upgrade so frequently, a shortened life span of cpu doesn't bother them. I have mine at 1.82 (1.2@1.4) because I need this CPU to run for at least a few years.

I hope what I wrote made sense to you. Good luck o/c your cpu.

to disappoint you, the fsb is only 142.. it's a low one I know.. strange that I forgot to mention it.
