The GT 212 and the next best single card solution

I am trying to figure out when the next 'best single card solution' - after the GTX 285 - will hit the market. I was going to wait until Q2 to buy a GT 212, but everyone is saying it is canceled. The question I have is, since the rumor is tied back to only one source (The Inquirier), and nobody ever believes what Charlie says about Nvidia, why is everyone believing this? (this is not a rhetorical question, I am actually wondering if there is a reason.)

So are we (as a community) waiting for more info on the GT 212 and its Q2 release, or are we assuming it really is dead? If it is dead, then the next upgrade would be the GT 300 due out in Q4, 2009 - Q1 2010, right?

If I have my facts straight (and heaven knows I may not) than that would make this a really good time to pick up a GTX 285 since it will spend nearly a year as the most powerful single card. it just seems like Nvidia wouldn't go a year without an upgrade to their best single card solution.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I've heard rumors of April across the web, probably the same you've heard. I haven't heard anything from NV as they really don't comment on unannounced products to anyone. Like anything else, there will eventually be new gen cards. That's a given. Right now though, there are plenty of powerful cards available to do the heavy lifting. Plenty to choose from.

From what we have heard: GT212 doesn't exist and GT215, GT216 and GT218 will launch at Q4 earliest; most likely 55nm + GDDR3

It's belt tightening time.. this roadmap makes perfect sense. Hoping no one's holding their breath on a high end release right now..

Game requirements and market conditions don't seem to be forcing video card manufacturers to come out with a new design just yet. I think AMD and Nvidia are pretty content in letting the R700 and GT200 series make them some extra cash.

You got that right buddy. If this is going be the case I will sit tight on my 8800Gt sli even longer..

Nvidia did that in the past. 8800 GTX was the fastest card on the market since November 2006 and until June 2008, when the GTX 280/260 were released. I didn't count the 8800 Ultra which was just an oc version of the GTX or the 9800 GTX which wasn't that fast at higher resolutions.

still 55nm in Q4? that sounds a little off especially since ATI already has its first 40nm card coming next month.

IN A MOVE sure to disappoint fanbois in basements all across the world, the Nvidia GT212 has still not taped out, but three others have. The 212 is dead, the other three will trickle out in April, May and June.

The reason is pretty obvious, the TSMC 40nm process is leaky as hell, and the bigger the chip, the more transistors that leak. Top this off with a totally botched design that couldn't be shrunk from 65nm to 55nm sanely, so 40 was very iffy.

That said, the three that have taped out are the GT218, GT216, GT215, the value, mainstream and performance parts respectively. They also taped out in that order. Yawn. The 216 and 218 come out around May 1 give or take a couple of weeks, the 215 a month later.

It looks like Nvidia knifing the GT212 has allowed them to put more resources into the 40nm parts, pulling them back in. Add in TSMC's utilisation dropping well below 50 per cent, and suddenly you have enough wafers at 40 to do a volume launch early. That explains the roadmap rearrangement.

Prepare to be underwhelmed unless you are really into smaller dies.

So if we are believing the Inq. about the GT212, then we can assume that these other cards will be out Q2.

That still means that the 40nm GT300 can be released in Q4, as scheduled.

Problem is that we have other rumors that state that TSMC's 40nm process is a mess so the high end 40nm cards could be delayed if TSMC doesn't fix it

Problem is, it's a rumor. I think AMD just released a mobile 4860 and 4830 on 40nm and announced product releases early Q2 in notebooks starting with ASUS.

they did, but the rumor says that the 40nm process is leaky, which means that it eats more power than it's supposed to and we don't have any reviews showing power consumption/heat produced. Also, those are small dies, the real problem comes when we get into behemoth territory. At the end of the day, everything we know about the next gen cards are rumors, so pick your poison

Do you ever stick around in a thread long enough to make a meaningful contribution, or do you know only how to pop in, make a derogatory one-line comment and then leave?

Not that your condescending remark wasn't helpful, but maybe you could be more specific about which one of us you are insulting. Or is your pointless post just a necessary evil associated with maintaining a rediculous daily post count?
