The Grim Present of Milwaukee Blacks

With less than 50% of black males working, it is quite obvious that this train has been derailed horribly. I look at these stats and it quite frankly scares the shit out of me. Worse still, I don't believe their are any solutions. Corporate America exported their jobs over the past three decades and now we are all fighting over the scraps of our once titanic manufacturing economy.

I guess their governor is doing a crappy job in bringing jobs to the state, probably devoting too much time to an obviously failed bid to became president. Though he may have a chance for VP. 😉

Why does black vs white unemployment even matter? Ill answer that, it doesnt. Everybody should just count as one unemployed person, not one unemployed white, or one black. All of these charts that compare arbitrary statistics between blacks and whites is only furthering the fairly apparent ethnic division in this country.

Or perhaps the democrat mayor of the city has more impact on issues related to the city rather than the state as a whole? Ya think?

Or maybe, just maybe, there are a lot more factors involved than just some idiotic "blame the (R)'s" or "blame the (D)'s" finger pointing. Naah, can't be. 🙄

That's true in a utopian world, but in the real world where there is significant racial disparity in both opportunity and outcomes, I think there's value in at least trying to figure out what causes some of the disparity and if there are measures that could help address the problems.

Guess you missed the wink at the end of the post...

I lived in Milwaukee for the first half of the time period covered. For the most part it was one of the least racially discriminatory cities I've lived in. The city's main problem is that it's economy is very heavily manufacturing based and we all know what has happened to manufacturing generally in the USA.

The disparate racial impact is very disturbing and probably is worse for the rest of the country.

What scares the shit out of me is that so-called supposedly educated people cannot even use simple words such as "there" or "they're" properly. I've seen it like 50 times today alone. If people cannot even construct basic english sentences, then what hope is there that they will see solutions to complex problems? Absolutely none.

For example, dyslexia can cause myriad spelling issues that aren't readily noticed, in spite of knowing what version of a word might be the correct one. Personally, I'm constantly guilty of misspelling certain words over and over again, and in spite of the fact I plainly know they are misspelled, I often don't catch it. Such is life.

BTW, the word English is ALWAYS capitalized, not just when it's convenient for you to do so. Just saying.

The answer to black unemployment is contained somewhere in the process of massive illegal immigration. It just has to be because otherwise, what appears by all measures to be an insane methodology supported by our government is actually insane.

More illegals = less unemployment.

Oh, and War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery and Ignorance is Strength.

And to the OP, I think historically bad high school dropout rates there are part of the problem. And I think the only way they pushed up the graduation rates, was by lowering the standards and putting more pressure on the parents through legal means to keep them in school, even though they might be borderline failing every class when they supposedly "graduate" from high school.

For the Milwaukee Public Schools, the rate has moved steadily upward from 54% in 2005 to 57% the next year, then to 60%, then up, again, to 65%, and, finally. to 70% in 2009, a healthy trend that should be applauded.

WI has an unemployment rate of ~4.4%. That is full employment.

I think the answer to unemployment is to remove the minimum wage. Think about it, we claim all the time that illegal immigrants are needed because they will do the jobs that we can't afford to pay citizens to do. Well why can't we afford it? Because of the minimum wage? We can't pay a legal US citizen to pick fruit because we would have to pay them minimum wage and it would drive fruit farmers out of business.

So if we remove the minimum wage, we would allow unemployed lower class citizens to compete in a whole new market. They could get jobs previously unavailable to them. This would also put pressure on the illegal immigrants in this country and reduce the attractiveness of coming to america. It's a win win.

Would only work if you simultaneously cut out welfare programs to people not employed. If you have greater income not working than you do working, then why work?

That graph ends at 2010. Curious what it would be like if it extended out another 5 years, especially considering 2010 was still at the heart of the economic slump.

Unemployment in Milwaukee is currently ~6%, but certainly unemployment is not the same number as "people not working".

As a thought experiment I've often tried to imagine what would happen to the world economy if the US eliminated the minimum wage at the same time it instituted a basic income or other similar strategy. Everybody gets enough money to survive at a very basic level, and if you want anything more than that you can work for whatever anyone is willing to pay you. All other forms of directed assistance (food stamps, subsidized housing, etc) are eliminated, and you live on what you get biweekly from your Citizen's Income or you supplement it by working. I imagine some kind minimum wage set by the market would still emerge, because nobody is going to work for pennies an hour. How many jobs would come back from overseas? Of course noncitizens would not receive the base income, but if they want to come here and work for whatever they can get, great, more power to them.

He may have some good ideas (if you are a conservative) but he comes off like a dead fish.

His Q numbers must suck.

really? because following ridged, trivial rules, is some how related to problem solving?

Only in the minds of the OCD.

Even after living in Georgia for the vast majority of my life, I've never felt more uncomfortable being a black man with a white partner than being in Milwaukee. Walking down Oakland near UW-M I couldn't believe how many black people wanted to give me shit for being with a white girl. Unfathomable.

I remember walking down there near the Gyro shop (awesome place btw!) and the first thing anyone ever said to me wasn't "Afternoon", or even "hey", it was "Oh! Look here at this uptown awesome dude with a white bitch!"

Friggin' hate Milwaukee. Pretty much permanent bad taste in my mouth.
