The Greatest of All Time!

Kabob

Lifer
Considering how broad spectrumed and (IMHO) horribly biased the Gamefaqs polls are going to be, I thought I'd poll here and see what everyone would vote as "the greatest X of all time" for various genres. Before I put a poll up we ought to have some ideas/nominees.

Categories I thought should be included:

Greatest of all time:
-Platformer
-FPS/TPS
-Action
-Adventure
-Traditional RPG (FF style)
-Adventure RPG (Diablo/Vampire the Masquerade style)
-Real Time Strategy
-Fighter Game
-Driving game
-Flight Sim
-Sports
-Puzzle
-Strategy RPG
-"God Game"
-MMO
-Console
-Game Character

Thoughts/nominees?

My picks:
-Platformer - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (or would this fall into Adv RPG?)
-FPS/TPS - Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
-Action - Super Double Dragon?
-Adventure - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
-Traditional RPG - Final Fantasy 8
-Adventure RPG - Diablo 2
-Real Time Strategy - Warcraft 3
-Fighter Game - Tekken 3
-Driving game - Mario Kart 64 or Forza Motorsport 2
-Flight Sim - TIE Fighter
-Sports - NBA Jam
-Puzzle - Portal
-Strategy RPG ----
-"God Game" - Still unsure of category definitions, I'll say Black and White
-MMO - Guild Wars, only MMO I played (because there was no monthly fee!!)
-Console - Super NES
-Game Character - Link (The Legend of Zelda)

No God Games allowed 😛

That's basically 4X games. Except I doubt there are any that are extremely popular other than the Civ and MoO series. What else would people even vote for? I never really got into the genre so I don't really know.

EDIT: Oh, I see. Yeah, basically turn-based tactics games, which there are a lot of. Off the top of my head, you've got Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, and all the ones erwos mentioned.

I do not see how anyone could call Civ or MoO an RPG, ever.

Here are my picks

-Real Time Strategy -- starcraft
-Fighter Game -- mortal combat

I'm not experienced enough in the other genres, but for Sports there's only two or three guarantees.

I misunderstood because of kabob mentioning God games. That caused me to read it as "strategy RTS" instead, which (while redundant) implies strategy games that are more focused on the really big picture rather than managing a few units (like Civ and MoO).

Anyway, it's hard to pick sometimes. I have to decide between which ones I thought were the most influential and the ones I enjoyed the most.

-Platformer - No opinion
-FPS/TPS - Call of Duty 1 (favorite), Counter-Strike (most influential) (I like tactical shooters).
-Action/Adventure - (I think these two should be merged BTW) - God of War. What a badass game, wow.
-Traditional RPG (FF style) - Fallout 2
-Adventure RPG (Diablo/Vampire the Masquerade style) - Diablo 2
-Real Time Strategy - Starcraft was probably the most influential, but I suck at RTSs so I prefer easier ones... C&C Generals Zero Hour is fun; so is Company of Heroes.
-Fighter Game - Most will say Street Fighter 2. Never could get into it. Only fighting game I've ever been able to play better than a blind retarded child was Soul Calibur because it didn't rely so heavily on combos.
-Driving game - Gran Turismo in general. Honorable mention to NFS: Underground 2 and Most Wanted. I sunk more hours into those than any other driving game even though they weren't outstanding.
-Flight Sim - None other than MS Flight Simulator.
-Sports - Madden series... for as much as people deride it (and I know it still has lots of problems!), this is by far the most-imitated sports game on the planet. And it's actually not that bad if you're able to restrain yourself from buying it every single year and then complaining that they didn't change enough.
-Puzzle - Tie between Tetris and Portal.
-Console - What? That's not a genre...
-Strategy RPG - No opinion, never play. Only one I ever played was Disgaea, briefly. Too overwhelming.
-"God Game" - No opinion. Not enough options. I don't really like any of the SimCity or Sims games.

-Platformer
Mario 64. Talk about a killer app that was unbelievably well done!

-FPS/TPS
Quake 2 ... have to go there as I spent way to much time playing it.

-Traditional RPG (FF style)
Lunar for the Sega CD (wow, I Googled for it and I never realized how famous it is)

-Fighter Game
Mortal Kombat (original arcade)

-Driving game
Forza 2 is pretty damned good

-Flight Sim
Forget the name of it, but it was the Flight Simulator that MSFT made like 15 years ago.

-Sports
NHL '93/'94 for the Sega Genesis

:Q They made it fun again like in the old days?

'93/'94 were gems. It was great. Simple interface. And there was a sort of handicapping. You could give a newbie the Blackhawks and take some god awful team for your self. The day of shoot, pass speed burst were the days. AS soon as they added all this spin move BS, the fun went away.

I added Naval Simulator to categories, and specified which platform I played all titles on. I also chose games based on personal experience and enjoyment, and did not bother with critiquing genres in which I have not played many titles.

Greatest of all time:

-Platformer- Donkey Kong (Arcade)

-FPS/TPS- Duke Nuke 'em (PC)

-Action- Tomb Raider (PlayStation)

-Adventure- Myst (PC)

-Fighter Game- Tie between Death Sword (Amiga) and Pit fighter (Sega Genesis)

-Driving game- Test Drive Unlimited (360)

-Flight Sim- A-10 Tank Killer (Amiga)

-Sports- Tie between NBA Jam (Sega Genesis) and SSX 3 (xbox)

-Puzzle- Portal (PS3)

-Console- Sega Genesis

-Naval Simulator- Red Storm Rising (Amiga)

Let' see:

Platformer: Super Mario Bros 3

FPS/TPS: Half-Life 2

Action: Ninja Gaiden Black

Adventure: Zork Zero (best interactive fiction ever, IMHO)

Traditional RPG (FF style): Final Fantasy 6

Adventure RPG (Diablo/Vampire the Masquerade style): Diablo II.

Real Time Strategy: Starcraft

Fighter Game: Tie: Virtua Fighter 5 / Soul Calibur 4.

Puzzle: Puzzle Quest

Strategy RPG: Disgaea 3 (w/ DLC)

"God Game": Sim City 3000

MMO: World of Warcraft

Console: Playstation 2

Indeed. My brother and I always played these two when we were growing up. His objective was to run up the score to ridiculous levels, my goal was to see how many body checks I could rack up before time ran out. My record was in the 500's for 20 minute periods... and the score was like... 70 something to 3. I can remember a few times that the game crashed, most likely due to running out of memory to store all the information on penalties, goals and assists that it reported on at the end of the game.
