The Great Video Card Hunt 2004

Hello,

I have begun my great hunt for a video card for my Doom3 system.
Best Buy is sold out of the BFG 6800 GT OC and 6800 Ultra OC and when I called corporate they said they may not get anymore in for some time (month). Frys today told me the same thing as far as timeline (Month). I refuse to get gouged by an online retailer who probably doesn't have the card but will take your money and back order. I was able to get the CompUSA manager to tell me they have 11 coming in and I was able to get them to pre-order me a PNY 6800 GT. I figure I will order and pay for it and if by some miracle I can get a BFG OC before then I will just cancel. CompUSA could not tell me a date when I would get it but at least I'm on the list and it is ordered. Am I the only one having all these issues getting a damn card?

Its unusual but for some reason Best Buy, CompUSA and others seem to have CHEAPER prices on the newest video cards than all the unknown online guys.
Unfortunately they also run out faster because the are better known and offer good return policies and such.

IF you get lucky on Pricewatch or Pricegrabber you may find the latest and greatest from ATI and NVIDIA. You may also pay up to 50% more for them.

You want the best prices, preorder from the big stores and wait a month (or more).
All the hard-core nuts are willing to pay higher than the MSRP to have it NOW.
You have to decide if the extra month of enjoyment is worth the money, keeping in mind they will go down, and some new technology will always be around the corner.

As far as the new gen cards go, if you see one, you better buy it or the next person through the door will!
