THE GREAT SEARCH: which bank has the best online banking?

I'm sick and tired of TCF Bank's online banking - it JUST gives you the amount and type of transaction (a.k.a. "Withdrawal, Check Card Purchase, etc.), with no merchant name, no 'portal screen' listing all your accounts, etc. It's rudimentary and at this point in time I'd expect better from a bank.

So, I'm looking at a couple options for a new bank (I will definitely be opening checking and savings accounts, and possibly a credit card sometime in the future (if I decide to cancel my Amex Blue for Students). The online banking software I'm most impressed by is Bank One, but National City's online banking (user: demo, pass: demo) is also pretty darn intuitive. Both companies offer free checking accounts, so that's not a worry, and they both have B&M branches in my town.

Any other suggestions? I definitely want to stay away from online-only banks. The thought of ATM fee reimbursement and mailing my checks to a far-away address scares me.

bank of america seems to have what you are looking for. i have been a customer for 5 years now, and am satisfied

B of A doesn't have any branches in my town - their online suite looks good, but with all the rebate checks I get, it'd be a hassle to deposit them.

I always recommend looking at a credit union first because they always have better customer service and rates (savings, CD's and loans).

That bites. We've got BoA (wife works there actually). Their online services are great. She has her employee account, our joint account 2 CC's and our mortgage thru them. Can look at all of it online. Cleared checks are linked, so you can see a copy of the actual check. You can "rename" your accounts as to how they show up (ie we have Wife's Checking, Wife's Savings, Joint Checking/Savings etc). Online transfers are a snap, from account on left, to account on the right, as you click on/select the accounts it gives you the available/actual balance on the accounts. Online bill pay, whole meal deal!

But since you stated no BoA in your town, I guess that is just a whole lot of worthless info :(

Any of the Canadian banks are the best.

However, in the States, I have always used B of A. My only complaint with them is that electronic transactions take some time to post. The amount of time is never the same. Sometimes they are there the next day and sometimes they take a few days.
