The Google voice android app is terrible lately

Putting all my gripes with google voice aside (no mms, crappy interface, cant separate text and voicemail, prob more) the app itself has been awful lately. Not sure if its my device, but it just sucks.

FYI im using a Samsung Captivate running Pinncle (a KH3 rom, which is probably one of the most stable roms out) and i have the newest version of google voice.

The trouble im having is when i go in and out of bad service areas. For example when im at my job or when i go visit my parents i usually have bad service (only a few bars). Im still able to text there via google voice or the regular app. So both data and voice work a little at least.

What eventually happens is google voice stops working. It will stop receiving texts and wont be able to send or receive unless i either turn data on and off or if that doesnt work I usually have to restart the phone or do a battery pull.

Im constantly having to text myself from my other number to see if my google voice app will receive it.

I have really been trying to convert over to my google voice number as my main line, but crap like this makes me want to abandon it altogether.

Unrelated - i know it might be my phone, but everything else works fine. And when i cant receive texts, first i go to my browser to check if my data is working. Then i manually refresh the app, force close and open the app, and still nothing works. Then i do the above steps.

I currently am debating whether or not i want to upgrade to the sgs2 in a week, or if i should stick with my captivate. Honestly, if i could work these bugs out then i really might just be able to hold off for another year and get the sgs 3 whenever it comes out. As much as i want to sgs2, i still feel bad about buying a phone that is already 6 months old...

anyone else having these problems with the google voice app on android?

i decided long ago that my GV number would be a separate part of my communications life. there were issues back then, and nothing has really changed. it has made it a bunch easier to not have a land line tho, and thats exactly what i treat it as. i give it out to people i dont know, and screen calls on it as they come in. i dont even check it on my phone, it annoys me.

I've noticed the GV app has been very slow on my Evo 3D lately.

I've noticed that too. At first I chalked it up to me needing more speed from my phone altogether, but i know it definitley used to run better 6 months to a year ago.

It is finicky. I have the same problems with bad connections.

I might just end up abandoning the app. The main reason i started using it was because being able to text over wifi was convenient, but its becoming more of a hassle than anything.

For an app that i would consider one of googles apps that should be on every android (like maps and gmail) it sure is a POS.

Im becoming less and less of a google fan everyday

It is great for vm, but I haven't used it much beyond that.

Well do you get enough vm's to notice if its not connecting at times?

I considered just going back to only using it for vm, but then the same issues could persist. and because i dont get vm's as much as i text, an important vm could go unnoticed for a long time.

Never an issue. I have it also setup to txt me too so I usually see it there first but then if I need to listen to it then I go over to GV and it has always been there.

Yep for vm, it's perfectly fine as you can have a backup plan in case the app goes bonkers. You have options for it to also sms you or email you (or both) about a new voicemail. You don't even need to app for voicemail. It's just there for GUI purposes. If you have it send you emails, it'll actually let you download the voicemail for playback on your phone.

Ill probably end up doing that, its just so inconvenient to have an app that is so buggy. I mean, its an app made by google, and its to support one of their services. You would think they would at least put a little time into making it work right, even though it just sucks in general.

I used to wish for more features, now i just want it to actually work.

I only use GV for calls as I have unlimited texting.
for some weird reason, when I use Wi-Fi, most of the time my calls cut in and out.
But if u turn on my data, calls work just fine.
Usually Wi-Fi is faster than 3/4g so I don't understand what the problem is.

Hit the Labels button.

yea i know i can sort it like that, i just hate how it does it by default.

I hate how the stock messaging program is so much better than google voice's. i just think for something that has been out for so long, they can make improvements. just sayin'

But there is a difference between saying something can't be done, instead of "I don't know how to do this", or "I don't like how this works".

That being said, I agree with you: It would be nice if there was a default setting for the Inbox, or even better yet - the option to have a different home screen icon for each message label (Text, Voicemail, Starred... etc), similar to having a different mail icon for each email account.

Should have rephrased myself then. Doesnt do it by default.

Bottom line - the app could be better. I can deal with its shortcomings, but the main reason i posted this here is the issue of not sending and receiving texts on occasion.

I also haven't experienced what i just read in the latest release notes:
* Warns you when no data connectivity before you compose/send text messages

I just get a waiting circle and my message never sends when this happens.

found that here: http://www.appbrain.com/app/google-voice/com.google.android.apps.googlevoice

what app are you using to make calls over wifi? I didnt think the gvoice app could do that. I thought you had to go through another app to make calls over wifi?
