The Google OS.

I was considering the desktop search and all that Google is coming out with. How long till they just say the heck with it and write their own OS, browser, email, and Office suite? Just looking at what all they are doing, I'm not sure it would be too far a leap for them.

Tired of the M$ BS, and all the other crap going on with the Apple and Linux group, they might take that "Do Good" thing to the next level. Kinda interesting thing to think about anyway. 😀

i say unlikely....but their servers already use a custom OS/application layer, so a desktop OS could happen

This was rumored a while ago, I remember seeing some screenshots of a beta version, it was called GooOS IIRC. but I also like to think that I will one day marry Alyssa Milano.

I'm sure the google think tank is coming up with tons of sh!t to build and develop now they got serious cash. And I wouldn't doubt an OS and productivity software is being developed.

If only they bought Tivo. Tivo users have identified over 50 really desirable ideas, but Tivo just seems to be chugging along.

If they did it would probably be just another shell / extension to linux (like Apple OSX did with BSD).

Market share would be only in niche areas like point of sale terminals and other terminals / limited function consoles with close to 0% home use since it would run little or no Windows software (some, erratically, using windows emulation like Lindows did).

OS no; browser absolutely.

Why do you think they hired this guy?

?Okay, we don?t know for a fact that Google is working on an operating system, but the tea leaves are pretty damned clear. Why else would they have hired Microsoft?s operating system architect, Mark Lucovsky? Surely not to write a spreadsheet or word processor.?
I don't know, to play rock-paper-scissor with this guy?
But that's not the only reason. I'm just thinking logically, Google's all about information gathering, searching, and distributing and the browser is pretty much the predominant method of doing so (at least searching and distributing part). So why not take a hand in that? Just my reasoning.

Who wants AdWords on their desktop?

I don't see it in the foreseeable future... there's just so much more to an OS than the desktop. They would need software and manufacturer support as well, or they'll just be in the same shoes as Linux is.

That's about what I'd come up with.

Creating a new OS from scratch is just an IMPOSSIBLE huge task - I mean, not even Apple did it with OSX. It's a LOT of work.

BUT....a Linux front-end? Yeah, that's a much easier job. Schools and libraries would love it to death - clean, small OS front end that will run on any kind of crappy 2-bit PC, still look 'modern' and GUI-like, built around (and possibly only capable OF) web browsing?

Yeah, such a system would definitely have its uses.

it's a maybe.
if they can somehow (1) get you to pay for it or (2) get advertisers to pay for it by delivering ads even when you are offline (they probably have to charge more for this option).
it all depends on whether or not they can get money back in the long run.

I just saw in interview on Charlie Rose with the CEO of Google. After watching that, and him talking about SCALE plus a few of the other things they are doing, I am SURE Google could do an OS if they wanted. Still I would prefer their take on an Google OS as I suspect it would further their path on enabling access to information. I wouldn't replace the other OS but offer an alternative that is unuiqe.
