The Golf Club

That actually looks really good. My uncle is into golf and was looking for a new golf game for his new laptop, this might be the ticket.

I may pick it up myself. Golf games are enjoyable in a casual way. I've never heard of the dev but they have a list of the games they've developed and worked on, including various versions of Madden with EA and a couple versions of Fifa along with Tiger Woods 2010. So they seem like they are well versed.

heard it's very meh in general. heard the course creator is clunky as hell.

there is no golf game that is nearly as good as hot shots golf. tiger woods has been ass since 2004 on xbox, when it was actually challenging. now in those games (at least the last one i played) you better be shooting like a -27 online to stand a chance.

hot shots looks childish on the outside, but it's actually very in depth and advanced/challenging. a lot more so than tiger woods.

I'm waiting to get it. I ordered an Xbox gift card on Newegg (10% off), but it hasn't been delivered yet (over 30 hours later). As soon as I get it, I'm purchasing the game. However, there are some potential negatives I've heard about, which include:

--No progression system, meaning who you are on day one is the same as the last day you ever play it
--No licensed players or equipment, meaning no using your real golf gear in-game, and it didn't sound like there were ways to customize gear either
--Online multiplayer is asynchronous
--Local multiplayer does not allow players other than the primary one to use their profiles in-game
--Watching a couple of streams of the game, the sounds were terrible, as the announcer sounded horrid and the ball impact on the grass sounded fake (almost like playing ping pong).

The way it strikes me as just doing kicks in Madden 25, where you use a stick to judge power and accuracy. It's not necessarily bad, but with no progression, it can probably get fairly stale quickly, if you don't have folks to play with locally. I'll still get it and probably enjoy it, but I'm skeptical about some things.

I never play golf games online. Most of the reviews I browsed harp on things that might not even impact the game on PC (since they clearly reviewed it on a console). I would probably buy it for PC if I got it at all. Further, there's a ton of metacritic user reviews giving 0 for a score. Most read like they didn't even play it at all. The couple that are positive seem to like it quite a bit because they understand they are buying a $35 game, that isn't trying to be Tiger Woods, that relies on you creating or downloading the thousands of user created courses out there. No there aren't stats but why is that so bad? You are playing golf, not an RPG. The focus seems to be on the course and the game of golf rather than upgrades and stat boosts which is fine to me. I used to play PGA tour back in the day on Windows 98 or whatever and never cared about stats. I picked a guy and tried to beat my best score, or a friend/relative's score.

The package you are getting seems fair for $35 IMO. I'm not very picky on Golf cause I'm not hardcore into it but I'll play it for something to spend some time on once in a while. I think with the lack of any real golf games for a while, this will keep my Uncle busy and perhaps myself too.

I was highly anticipating this, but most of the reviews on Steam are negative about the game in general, that it is still unfinished and the sensitivity on the swings is whacky. I'll keep my eye on it to see if it improves any.

If you look at the reviews, the people who put the most time into it are mostly positive on it. People who played less than 30minutes are not. I dunno what that means, maybe some people just don't get into it. Or some people are impatient. I couldn't say.

I'll let my uncle buy it first if he wants it. I will have to play it myself.

Most of the positives I saw were early access and they expected the game to get better. IMO I wouldn't think a golf game would be a game you'd have to put 30 hours into to decide if you liked it or not or if it was complete. Hole after hole is mostly the same, the only thing that should change is your skill level so you would think most people would have a good feel after a round or two.

Well, a few points of rebuttal on this (and the following posts, but not in the mood to multi-quote them all):

1. As for the current state, it wouldn't bother me if they weren't sending it out as the "official" release version. The things that people complain about (such as the aforementioned inconsistent swing power, along with the poor sound quality and the lack of functional mouse controls) are problems which should be worked out be releases. Despite being considered a 1.0 version, it still seems like a beta. It's basically Early Access without the label, to an extent.

2. I guess if you're not big on real-life golf, I can get where you find the lack of progression normal. By progression, I didn't mean golfer stats, necessarily. Different golf clubs are made in different ways with varied levels of forgiveness. So, you can have a high-improvement club that doesn't punish a mishit as much, while a low-improvement club gives a more-precise feel on hit feedback, and is considered more "workable." So when I mention progression, it's something where I'd rather see conventional golf mechanics present.

I'd like to see clubs where there is maybe more forgiveness, while others have more of that "workability," but I guess that's something of a hard concept to build into a video game.

3. Like you said, this is about the game of golf. That's kind of where the lack of licensed equipment (not too concerned with the lack of players) disappoints me a bit. I was looking forward to a golf game where I'd get to use my real-life clubs, or something close to them. There would simply a be a "cool" factor about using my equipment, like how Madden can dominate a superior, non-licensed football game because the real players are there.

It's been over 36 hours, and still no Xbox Store code from Newegg. As such, I'm STILL waiting on buying this game. At this point, it DEFINITELY wasn't worth the $2.20 saved to get screwed over with the time delay. They say it can take up to 48 hours for something to get delivered, but if it gets to that point tomorrow, I'll definitely be canceling my order and saying something to customer service, because this blows.

This wouldn't be for me, but rather something I would play with my uncle. He got a new laptop and was searching for a golf game. The ones he had don't work on windows 8. The tiger woods games that may work are going for a hundred bucks or more because they don't make them anymore. So this might be what he wants.

I played a round, and I've got to say that it's HARD to recommend this game. The graphics are total garbage, and the fact that it's 720p and 30 FPS makes me think that the developers are either bad at their jobs or REALLY rushed to get the game out. I mean, there's no legitimate foliage on the ground. The rough is just a stretch of darker green than the fairway.

The player customization is really poor as well. There's no option to not wear a hat or glove, and they have a 5 colors for each piece of clothing. Such things ultimately don't hurt gameplay, but it's pretty disappointing.

The gameplay complaints come from a lack of proper introduction to the controls, and the lack of markings for trajectory. I don't know how my club will loft the ball, nor is there any kind of distance marking for shots. Basically, tee shots on doglegs involve a decent amount of trust in the game's automated club selection.

As the game stand now, it's a 3/5, maybe. It's graphically wretched (like, Madden and CoD look like visual marvels next to it), and the gameplay is really barebones. It's all an opinion after 9 holes, but I have to say that there's a LOOOOOOT of work to be done, and I'm really disappointed in HB for promoting this as anything but a beta-quality release.

I'm not arguing that the game is bad, but the complaint about lack of trajectory is kind of silly. It's trying to be more of a simulator, and in real life you learn the trajectories and pick the right club for how YOU hit it.

Judging from what he said, it picks a club for you and you don't get a choice. If that is the case then it isn't a simulation at all.

If that's the case, then you're right. The way I read it was it auto-selects a club like most golf games do (if you want) but you can still pick another club if you know that's better for you.

i didn't get that from him. i think he just wants it to be like tiger woods how it shows the trajectory of each shot before you hit it. and that is just another reason i think tiger woods is way too easy, due to things like that.

personally i think it's better when you have to experiment with trajectories and stuff, especially because it will change if you are on a sloped piece of land when hitting the ball. it would be lame if it had the "peggle line" for every shot regardless of how you'r lying.

This is what I was referring to. I also think not knowing exactly where it will hit is better, that's how the old PGA tour and Jack Nicholas games I played were.

i just got the impression he meant on like a par 3 you really don't know how far the iron you have selected is going to be hit since there is no trajectory on it, so you don't know what to change to if there is an uphill or downhill tee shot.

if you truly can't change clubs that is terrible. that is just such a dumb decision in general that i couldn't fathom a golf game actually going out like that lol, which is why i didn't think he meant you can't change clubs.

I'm on the fence with this one. Until I see a twitch stream I won't touch it. I really would like a golf game but don't want to spend $40 on a turd. I figured we wouldn't get a good golf game this year since they cut off tiger woods anyway and this game got my hopes up.

I won't buy that animated golf game that the xbone has, I'd rather have something like tiger woods but who knows when that will happen.

I bought the optishot sim last november. I already had the projector and htpc. Winters in Canada suck with no golf. We set it up in my buddys shop and it was an immediate hit. You swing your clubs and a foam ball. Close enough for accuracy and way fun. We get together Sundays just like in the summer.

There are videos and streams on the xb1. Find the game in the store and scroll over to the right and there are some.

if you still have a ps3 hooked up, hot shots golf: out of bounds (part 5) is the best golf game out there. it's better than the 6th one they put out on ps3 imo (which was a port of the portable version on either vita or psp).

I guess I should have worded it better. By "trajectory," I meant distance. For example, we don't get a tutorial, so there's no teaching about reading distances. So, I know my club will go X number of yards, but I don't know how far that is. On a hole where there's a large expanse of water running through the fairway, that's a big issue. When you press the 'Y' button, it takes you to the expected landing spot, but it's a vague area of the course, in a way. So, your driver goes 265 yards. The water's maybe 250 yards out. The game will probably give you the 5-Wood, which has 225 yards of carry. However, you don't really know where 225 is on the course, and you have a decent headwind. It's tough to know if you have enough distance to the water to go up to the 255-yard 5-Wood or the driver, to compensate for the wind. It becomes more of a trial-and-error, and remembering for next time, than actually learning to read distances.

The club selection is automated like other golf games. You don't HAVE to use the pre-selected club, but it's likely the one you'll need. So, from 155 yards out, you will be given whichever iron is closest to that in distance. However, you can switch to a different club. Maybe your 6-iron is a 158-yard club (I can't remember the iron distances). You have wind at your back, so you can either:

A. Add loft to the shot, taking off distance from the hit.
B. Go to the 7-iron, which is maybe a 145-yard club.

You can choose, I just meant that without any kind of tutoring from the game, a new golfer will basically have to trust what the game is handing him for a club.

Anyway, if someone wants to see the game, message me on LIVE. I should get the message quickly, because they're supposed to push to my phone via SmartGlass. Whenever I see the message, I'll take a break from Doctor Who and put the game up on Twitch.

Sure, I'll probably be around all night, just have to run to Best Buy a little later for a short while. Just message me whenever.
