The carrot on a stick philosophy of ethics fails for this very reason. Look at some of the people in this thread who refuse to adopt ethics because they see others not doing so. They think ethics are only worth it if everyone else is doing it too.

If we're talking strictly on the process then you cant assume that the mechanism will fail -- that karma wont maintain balance.

If there is no "...others do unto you", then golden rule is also invalidated. not that it is ideal to begin with. one who does not value his/her life can go ahead and take another.

karma is action-unspecific

The "others do unto you" is not an expectation of reward unless you take it out of context. "As you would have others do unto you" is simply the benchmark that you set in how you should treat others.

Yeah, the cynical twists have been pointed out multiple times in this very short thread already.

Do Unto Others BEFORE They Can Do Unto YOU! ;)

Yeah yeah yeah. We've heard all the cynic variations.

Those who have the gold make the rules.

Do unto others as you expect them to do unto you

and so on... :p

i agree.

i am always polite, i dont diss people even when they start in on me. it takes quite a bit to make me angry enough to name call, let alone get mad. used to make my ex very mad when she just wanted to argue/ fight that i wouldnt.

Half of them can be used as study material for "Inferiority Complex 101".

Actually, the vast majority of those are in spurts that occur in long debate threads. If you look, I don't post most days of the week, but when I get into a debate, I post quite a bit until done.

Actually we've covered this and just a little common sense fills this non gap perfectly.

If you do not know someone at all, the best way to treat them is how you would like to be treated. As you do get to know them, you treat them as they would like to be treated because you would like others to do the same for you as they get to know you.

I dunno. Been living by it for a decade and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who knows me to any extent who would classify me as a fool.

I my opinion the biggest fools are those who believe in ethics only when they stand to gain from them, but toss them aside if it involves any loss or no net gain.

This rule doesn't always work.

Example: Person A loves to get into arguments. Person B doesn't like arguments and only wants to live in a peaceful world. Person A does what he wants and thus, Person B hates Person A. :)

Folks, please read the thread to see if something has already been addressed.

TridenTBoy3555 is a known troll, don't worry about him.

He will go away when he gets tired of trolling.

The golden rule doesn't really work for me for obvious reasons but i think that if EVERYONE followed it it would work just great.

Soon things will be different and then it most certainly will apply.

The majority of men wouldn't mind being sexually assaulted by decent looking girls. But the other way around I think would be less appreciated :p

Again, it's a pretty safe bet that a girl will not enjoy being sexually assaulted. Therefore, you pretty much know her wishes already and will treat her according to them because you would want others to do the same for you.

Oh you mean Karma. Yeah that shit don't work. Your golden rule? More bullshit. It may work for you, but it doesn't work for everybody.

Karma works perfectly. Good karma is like a shield against bad karma, and the more good karma you generate the more bad karma it takes to penetrate it. If karma is not working for you, then you need to attempt to unselfishly reevaluate what you think karma might be to bring it into focus and make it work for you. But it is not an instant thing. It might take you a very long time to stop the negative karma train and turn it around and make it go the opposite direction.

In some peoples cases, they are subjected to so much negative karma that simply fighting positively against their oppression is enough to make good karma work in their favor very easily. For other people who are perhaps living a sheltered and privileged life, they might have to work 10xs harder to get good karma working for them to overcome a selfish negative mental burden.

So the threshold of at what point positive karma works for you is hugely different from person to person. Which would make people who are at one extreme end doubt how powerful karma really is, and make them unaware of how much karma is working against them, or even for them.
