So I took my girlfriend at the time to see this movie when it came out in 1972. We both though the movie was very good, but the interesting thing was that as we were driving down the road afterwards there was part of a large truck's tire tube crumpled up in the road and I swear to God the way it happened to be folded up made it look exactly like a horse's head. Maybe a little too much for coincidence but it really freaked me out.

The fact that you don't think Godfather is a big deal, shows how amazing the Godfather movies are.

Before Godfather, "The Mafia" was something wierd, condescending, one-dimensional in the movies. Francis Coppola, the director, made a movie about a Family, in both the mafia and the biological senses. He gave those characters depth, details, background, reality - changed the way we looked at organized crime.

That is some coincidence, and that would freak me out too.

The Godfather is the I Ching. The Godfather is the sum of all wisdom. The Godfather is the answer to any question. What should I take on my vacation? Leave the gun, take the cannoli. What day is it? Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Wednesday. The answer to your problem is Go to the mattresses...

Isn't that from you got mail?

Why do guys like the Godfather so much? What's so great about it? I saw all three and I thought it was kinda cool to see how the mafia family worked and the evolution of the Michael. However, I wouldn't consider it in one of my top 10 favorite movies, a lot of people seem to think this movie/trilogy is one of the greatest.

The horse head.

I read somewhere that they used a real horse head :Q

That kinda helps, thanks.

I love that movie.

Why do you love it though?

It has style, incredible acting, a superb cast, a great story and is the gold standard against which all other films in the genre are judged.

A lot of other movies have many or all of those same traits, yet none are so popular as the Godfather.

Care to name a few?

Well not "a lot," but other classic movies like Casablanca, Shawshank Redemption, Schindler's List. I can see the greatness of those movies, but for some reason, I just can't see it in the Godfather.

The Shawshank Redemption is actually one of my favorite movies. I actually rank it just ahead of The Godfather I & II. They're all great movies for different reasons.

I pretty much agree. It's a very good movie, and some of the acting is mesmerizing, but I don't consider it one of the greatest ever the way some do.

I think Rumble Fish is a better movie, to mention another Coppola film.

Wait until you're older and your attention span has matured. Then watch it again.

I didn't enjoy (appreciate) it when I watched it in high school. Watched part I & II after college and thoroughly believe them to be the pinacle of cinema.

..it's the art form. Great dialog and story/character development along with suspension of disbelief. The book was good too.

Apocalypse Now > Godfather

Yeah, I know they're not comparable as such, just that both were directed by Copola, and both are movies that are generally considered to be masterpieces by many, yet many others don't get them.
That said, I guess a big reason why I didn't like The Godfather as much as many others is that I never cared for Marlon Brando.
Not cause he's a bad actor(obviously), I simply don't like him for some reason.

Oh, and I think Apocalypse Now could have been even better if he wouldn't have been doped out during the filming, I guess that's a reason not to like him :)

Never seen Casino, but agreed on the rest. Own them all (except Casino) on DVD
