Veteran Wall Street Journal food reporter Raymond Sokolov traveled America in search of the best hamburger and says he found the hands-down winner at Ann's Snack Shop on Memorial Drive.

Owner Ann Price's iconic "Ghetto Burger" ? a double-patty bacon cheeseburger sandblasted with seasoning salt ? bested dozens of better-known wimpies. Sokolov called it a "masterpiece" and "the next level of burgerhood."

Ann's, an eight-stool restaurant, has been around for 35 years. Loyal customers know not to speak until "Miss Ann" addresses you first. A sign warns guests not to curse.

Sokolov also loved the charred patties at the Earl in East Atlanta and at the Vortex in Little Five Points; he called Atlanta home to the "best burgers in America."

These three bested Los Angeles' famed In-N-Out Burger and chef Daniel Boulud's $32 foie-gras-stuffed burger at DB Bistro Moderne in New York.

The story comes out in Saturday's Wall Street Journal Weekend Edition.

I'm surprised the NAACP or the ACLU hasn't said something about the name of the burger yet. They didn't care for "Ghetto Monopoly"....

The restaurant is owned by black people so it is OK.

What about the Luther Burger!

Some versions of the Luther Burger are made with two donuts. At other times, a single donut is cut in half and grilled after the meat has been cooked separately; the donut halves are placed around the meat glazed-side-in, and the whole sandwich is flattened on the grill and cooked briefly to allow for somewhat less messy consumption. Luther Burgers often include cheese and/or bacon but normally no vegetables or condiments such as ketchup, mustard, pickles, or relish, all of which might normally accompany a burger.

The burgers at Vortex are excellent; those at the Earl are good too. But I've never been to Ann's. Guess it's time to make a trip :D

Atlanta is much more than that! There's the old Coke bottling plant, Turner Field... the airport.

I am growing increasingly alarmed at just how frequently I am hearing this from other men. :(

It's a Futurama Reference from the episode "The Deep South" as alkaline5 pointed out by finishing the quote.

Sounds like dozens of other burgers I've had, except for the seasoning salt. Is there more information about what makes it special?

Reminds me of The Boondocks episode.
