I believe that we this war was an excellent excuse to carry out long term objectives. For years we have been wanting to get oil from central asia and russia, but Iran literally stood in the way. Now that we will eventually conquer Afghanistan and impose a puppet government, oil will flow through afghanistan to Pakistan and to the West. Eventually, we might set up a military base in Pakistan and end the Kashmir conflict. In the end, we will bring peace between India and Pakistan, isolate and gain some leverage against Iran and Saudi Arabia economically with russian and central Asian oil, have closer ties with Russia. Who knows, they might eventually join NATO, and/or the EU, where we can control them. China will be isolated and we will gain leverage there as well as we pit powers against powers. Iran won't gain Russian sophisticated military technology.
